  • The wife of a relative sometimes tells me of strange occurrences in the homes they've lived in.

In their present home the youngest daughter has seen a girl in the parents' bedroom or around the house and would be able to describe her with the same features and wearing the same clothing.

In a previous home the mother said that she was chased out of the cellar by something which told them to get out.  They also claim to have had strange issues with huge horseflies in the cellar within days of moving into this house, and later large maggots on the ceilings.  They'd sometimes hear loud bangs, and a few times everything in the bathroom medicine cabinet would fall out on its own.

She is a good gardener and sold her own vegetables one year, and some man in black asked for a glass of water which she gave, and in return he gave her some crystal which he said would help the garden in the future, and walked down the road and was gone.  The crystal was left behind when they moved out.

There were other tales which I will not recount here, but the point of the thread is to ask about what a Catholic should do assuming that these things are true mainly for my own satisfaction as these stories creep me out.  I do not have reason to believe that they are lying, but then the tales are pretty far out there.

I suggested that they see their priest, and I guess they took it under advisement.  They are Catholics and I charitably assume that they go to Mass every week and receive the Sacraments.  They also keep pictures and Crucifixes in the house, including the Holy Family, the Sacred Heart, the Blessed Mother, and The Last Supper.

I don't know what to tell you.  Do we have very and defective senses of a spiritual world around us, or do we allow imagination and the power of suggestion to overcome good sense?  Or is it likely a combination of both?

My good friend worked at the zoo as a night watchmen.  He once claimed to see a woman at night pushing a baby carriage, an old fashioned pram.

    What can I say?

I've had some odd experiences, but always rather hazy, unreal - once clairvoyant - sometimes seeming to be telepathic - usually hard to remember clearly.  People can be led to doubt the evidence of their own senses, when they shouldn't.

St. Thomas Aquinas believed that witchcraft and curses by witches were possible.

It is important to avoid dwelling on these things, as it feeds morbid fascinations and could lead bad spirits to take notice.

Those who have a predilection towards being fascinated with these topics should avoid them.  And avoid horror movies and novels.  (like The Shining).

"There are more things on heaven and earth than are dreamt of" - that doesn't mean we should be hearkening to the voices of bad spirits.

  • Again I don't know what to believe concerning this.

I usually try to occupy my mind when these thoughts come to me, but not because I fear temptation of believing in seances or anything related to some spiritual idea contrary to Catholic faith; rather because I don't like being scared of such things.  I used to have a major problem with the fear of things unseen, or things which were hidden.  As a teenager I read an article about Disney urban legends and for a couple months I burnt the midnight oil every night, but not because they were ghost stories.

If I see apparitions or believe to see them, or experience real or imagined phenomena such as I have described it, will a priest be of any use in overcoming this?  I realize that keeping a $19.95 Brazilian Power Crystal (made in China) for spiritual reasons is not a good idea, of course.

  • Having occult things can lead to demonic activity.

Throw away any astrology, yoga, spiritualism, new age, pagan, etc. things or books.

  • i knew a woman who had to move out of her house because she claimed ghosts (or demons) were causing all sorts of mischief. when she told me this i looked at her for some sign that she was lying or exaggerating, but she said it matter of fact-ly without any melodrama or seeming ulterior motives, so i tend to believe her.

they would scare the heck out of me. the first sign, even a subtle one, of some supernatural presence in my home and i would be out the door lickety-split! and never go back! i would hire someone to go in there and move all my stuff out.

  • This is one of the big questions:  is the supernatural real or not?  If it is, then do we have the capacity to control it/protect ourselves from it?  I would think for a catholic the answer to both those questions should be emphatically yes.  Demons are real, but so are angels and we are promised their protection!

  • PRAYER TO THE GUARDIAN ANGEL

Angel of God, my Guardian dear,
To whom His love commits me here,
Ever this day be at my side,
To light and guard, to rule and guide.  Amen.
