Getting Hardcore for Advent

  • I normally don’t do much for Advent, even though it is a penitential season some refer to as the “little Lent.”

But given the world situation, I’m going to try to do some heavy penance in reparation to God, who is understandably angry with us.

As my primary defect is intemperance, can anyone suggest good penance designed to combat this?

    Thanks in advance!

  • What do you mean by intemperance?  That term itself is very broad?  Are you referring to controlling your temper?  That’s a bit different than than intemperance per se.

  • Fasting is the right way to deal with intemperance, including abstinence from intoxicants.

Yeah, this was similar to my line of thinking.
For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders, insomuch as to deceive (if possible) even the elect. (Matthew 24:24)

  • What about sleeping without a pillow?
    Or on the floor?

To show reverence to the holy family sleeping in a stable

And praying to God for help too.

  • Here is some ideas that we can start this Advent.
Paying cash for things so you know you can truly afford it.  Pay cash.

    • Keeping things that really mean something to you
    • Donating unused items in your home to the poor
    • Paring down the clothes in your closet to the ones you actually wear
    • Letting go of your fantasy self and embracing who you are right now
    • Spending more quality time with your family instead of time shopping

More time in prayer and song. Turn off the cell phone etc.

  • Get rid of children’s toys.  A life like baby doll for each girl.  One stuff animal No 50 barbies.  No pink plastic toys. It harms the environment and my eyes.  Boys trucks, tractors.  Toys job related.  No foolish race cars or monster trucks. No action figures.   Buy Catholic related books and board games. No electronic games or toys that need batteries. Marbles, Jax, yo yos

Most of us generation Xers didn’t grow up with many toys. We played outside.  If any of us had a tree house or outside house, we worked on it and it was made of wood.  Many of us had tents when it was hot outside to read our books.  We made up games for inside and outside. We used our brains.

Clothing.  It is terrible to see how children dressed.   Back in the 1970’s , most children wore mostly clothes with without any Disney or super heroes or even sports.  That came later in 1980’s.
Don’t do it.  Stop dressing little girls like clowns in hot pink  and unicorns.  No make up or nail polish for little girls.
There is normal clothes out there new or at thrift shops.  Or clothes can be donated to chapels. We grew up having clothes passed down from family or neighbors.  It was well made clothes too not the junk that is made today.  We grew up “green” and “saving the environment”naturally.

  • As soon as I read pink and thought Christmas, this image comes to haunt the eyes. At least the kid got a Red Ryder for Christmas.
