  • So, I'm going to visit a cemetery tomorrow and all 8 days of the All Souls Octave,  to gain the plenary indulgence for the Poor Souls.  I'm thinking I may not be in a state of grace, but I'm getting to confession asap.

My question is: if when performing the act necessary for gaining an indulgence you aren't in a state of grace,  but later regain a state of grace by going to confession, can you still gain the indulgence?   If so,  when would it take effect,  at the time of the act or later when you regain a state of grace?

As a rule, I do not think it works that way - except perhaps like with All Souls Day when we are able to get to confession within a certain amount of days, 8 days before or after for All Souls Day. But if it works that way at all, I would think that it would be for only a partial indulgence, not plenary.
