  • I have a few questions for those who know. Please do not answer if you do not know.

    1. How many Church Fathers were there?
    2. How many of them taught BOD?
    3. How many of them taught that Baptism was necessary for salvation?

  • Tertullian, St. Cyprian, St. Basil the Great, St. Cyril of Jerusalem, St. Gregory nαzιanzen, St. Ambrose, St. John Chrysostom, St. Augustine, St. Prosper of Auitaine, St. Fulgentius, St. Bede  are Church Fathers that taught BOD.  They also taught that Baptism is necessary for salvation.  The two teachings do not contradict one another.

Tertullian, technically cannot be considered a Church father as he letter became unreliable.

I am not sure how many Church Fathers there are all together.  But they would all, with very few if any exceptions, agree that BOD and the necessity of Baptism for salvation are true.  Especially if both teachings were properly presented and their objections answered by the above mentioned Fathers.

  • That is quite a few names. I remember another poster, Ladislaus, claimed that there was only one father of the Church who taught BOD. Is he wrong or a re you wrong?

  • This is Ladislaus and that poster is lying.  St. Augustine is the only Church Father who floated (not "taught") the idea of BoD.

  • Who cares how many Fathers taught BOD?

When the popes and councils infallibly defined that the sacrament is not optional for salvation - regardless of how many Fathers there are, they all are bound too and must submit to that decree - not some variation of it.

What you mean is they must submit to your understanding, which is opposed to that of the Church.
