  • Having forgotten to perform the penance I was assigned after confession I now find myself unable to do it anymore. Does this affect the absolution in any way? Should I confess it next time I receive the sacrament?

  • I was always taught that intentionally failing to do penance invalidates the Sacrament and is mortally sinful, while negligently failing to do penance doesn't affect the validity of the Sacrament, and is venially sinful.

  • If you forgot in good faith, you are not guilty of any grievous sin. Just mention it next time you go to Confession. And it doesn't invalidate the absolution you received unless you had no intention of performing the penance when the priest administered it to you.

  •  :dancing-banana:Agree with last poster.  But it wouldn't harm to do some other penance in its place.
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

Instead of posting, why not just do the penance?  If you can't remember what it was, then go to Confession again this Sunday!  No delay.  And none of this "I forgot in good faith" stuff because you didn't forgot you were careless in fulfilling your duties.  Next time, do your penance as soon as you get out of the Confessional - go straight to a pew or an altar rail and do your assigned penance.

This is extremely harsh, and make many assumptions.  I suggest you are now the one in need of Confession for assuming bad motives.

Perhaps the OP did go straight to the pew to do his penance, but forgot that quickly.  Sometimes penances are long, complicated, and hard to remember, and sometimes people have very poor shot-term memories.

Perhaps the penance wasn't solely prayers, but also apologizing to a person the OP wronged, but he can no longer reach that person (or something similar).

There are are number a reasons a person can indeed fail to do penance in good faith.  Your tirade is ridiculous.

  • Let's not overreact. That's not a tirade above. Read it again.

Actually, some priests give penances that extend for several consecutive days, and if you miss a day, you have to start over. (Yes, they exist, and I've had them before.)

If you end up having this unfortunate thing happen (WHERE YOU DID FORGET IN GOOD FAITH) then when you go to your next confession, just confess that you forgot to finish the penance and the priest will give you a different one. (And many times, you can just get another penance.)
    Matthew 5:37

But let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil.

Don't worry about the tone or your reception of the advice, just do what this guy says!

Do it sooner rather than later!

  • It's good to do penances as soon as possible, but not necessary. When I get a litany that isn't in my prayer book, I do it another time, when I'm back home and can find it online. I may not remember to look for it for days though!

  • I always remember this:

    Quote from: Our Lord
If therefore thou offer thy gift at the altar, and there thou remember that thy brother hath any thing against thee; Leave there thy offering before the altar, and go first to be reconciled to thy brother: and then coming thou shalt offer thy gift.

It's probably not directly related, IDK, but that's why I don't receive the Eucharist if I've forgotten to fulfill Penance. I think I heard it from a priest and it stuck with me, though. I know it's not required, but then I think, that was Jesus, and it seems just relevant enough, so that's what I go with.

Sometimes a penance includes a good deed that can't be done in a pew or at the altar rail.  Sometimes it can't be done right away or all at once.  ie.  Making restitution, a novena, a mid-week visit to the Blessed Sacrament....  I'd advise the forgetful one to simply do the penance, or if he doesn't recall what it was, to do SOME type of penance, then to relate the entire matter to the priest.  Even if is 100% laziness, confess this as well!

Only on Cathinfo would a post like this get two thumbs down. Sheesh, I think some of the posters here believe that God wants to send souls to hell.
