Title: Financial Assistance Question
Post by: Änσnymσus on February 06, 2014, 08:24:50 AM
Good Morning One & All,
I hope everyone is well on this day. I have a pressing question & I not know where else to turn. After a few job losses & hard times, my family is in need of some financial assistance. Where can we turn to get a small amount of help paying a large outstanding bill? We don't have family that can help & we are desperate. Our water is going to be turned off shortly because we have fallen way behind on our water bill. We owe nearly $5,000 to our town & can't pay it. If there is anyone who knows where we can turn to get help with this, we would be forever grateful. We have tried asking for donation thru our paypal account. If anyone has any idea what we can do, please feel free to contact me  or our paypal e-mail which is.

Your help will help this family and we in turn will be able to start helping others.

Thanks so much.

God Bless,
SJ

You can file a dispute with the public utility commission, that will buy you some time at least for the water bill, they can't disconnect once you contact them and it's being investigated.   Search google for public utility commission for your state and call them asap or do the online form if it's available.  Sorry you are facing this.

Dear SJ,

I would help you if I could, but I have very little money myself.

I promise you my prayers and you must keep trusting in the Lord Who never breaks his promises:

Psalms 33:20

"Many are the afflictions of the just; but out of them all will the Lord deliver them."

And here is a prayer that never fails:

I have every sympathy with your situation.

2 Corinthians 1:7

"That our hope for you may be steadfast: knowing that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so shall you be also of the consolation."

God bless,

Andy S

I would be do everything you can to pay off that water bill.  Municipal authorities (such as water and sewer) have the ability to place liens on your property without a hearing if you fall behind in your bills.  Once the lien is in place, they can have it sold at Sheriff's Sale without your consent.

Perhaps you can ask for your local church to do a collection for you?

Many prayers!

I don't think I'm going to allow anonymous solicitations for money on CathInfo.

Allowing Catholics who have fallen on hard times to solicit the charity of others is one thing -- but you're going to have to give your name, or at least your anonymous screen name!

Just for starters, to protect members here, all a person's solicitations need to be under the same screen name, so we can all "keep track" as it were, of your "story" and whatnot. It's harder to scam a large body of people.

I have to think of the membership here, as well as the individual Catholic in need.

$5,000 behind on your water bill?

1. That's a LOT of water, and
2. Utilities aren't in the business of extending credit. They have to pay for all that water usually, so once you've missed your 2nd payment, you'll find that nothing comes out of your kitchen faucet anymore.

You can get thousands of dollars behind to your bank for your mortgage and credit cards, but utilities usually cut you off RIGHT away.

That's why poor people stop paying their credit cards and mortgage first. Foreclosures take a lot of time. But if you don't pay your electric bill, you'll be needing candles and eating room-temperature meals REAL soon.

Do you collect rainwater? That is not just a facetious question.

I don't know where you live, probably US. But the normal procedure where I live, if you cannot pay your bills outright, is to contact the provider, inform them of your difficulty and check if it is possible to pay in small installments.

Have you tried that?

How do you rack up some a large bill for water? Do you run a factory?

I thought the water bills was separate from the $5000. If I had to guess the $5000 is probably property tax. Assuming this is legit.

If you are that poor, use your income tax return to pay your bills off instead of spending it.

Reps can only make the payment arrangements the system allows them to. One broken payment in the past so many months and they may not allow a payment arrangement. For a utility the best thing to buy time is to contact the public utility commission, they have a lot more power to postpone disconnects than the customer service or collection rep.

In the UK we have had so much rain this winter that you could run a factory.

I have a small brook at the bottom of my garden and the flow rate is so high I could easily generate 2kw continuous from it.

Collecting rainwater makes sense.  Also very good for plants.  When I water flowers and veg with chalky tap water they don't grow as well.

Problem is that a collection, filtration and distribution system requires money and organisation and motivation to set up and maintain.  The very things that indebted people and low income people tend not to possess.

In the states, public water has become a scam. By that I mean run by corps who have stockholders. They raise rates every other year in double digit percentage. They force their cap ex to the homeowners.

Public water is a civic duty and should be handled as such.

Anyway, I assumed as well the water was separate vs the 5k bill. Utility shut off is likely and the bill must be paid off to turn on.

Municiple liens get placed all the time and follow the property until its sold in most cases. Past due taxes force a sheriff sale eventually but if a mortgage is present they usuall step in and pay it to protect their interest.

At some point the whole financial spiral gets to where you throw your hands up, accept it and walk away. Your goal is to survive first, worry about stuff second.

Is this the same member selling stuff before?
