  • Just saw captain America cινιℓ ωαr film. They have ladies as superheroes or superheroine. Not sure.  Anyway it shows women beating villains next to men.   Is this OK from a Catholic perspective?

  • No it's not okay. The warrior role is one of power - it's masculine, and for a woman to usurp that role is against nature.

Moralising aside, it's stupid. Films like this are giving impressionable young women the idea that they can take down a man thrice their size in a physical confrontation when what will happen in the real world is they'll freeze up in fear or be physically overcome, and their assailant isn't going to stand there waiting for her to hit him.

"We must risk something for God!"~Hernan Cortes

    Agreed.

If there's one genre of film that all Catholics should easily be able to avoid, it's superhero films. Come on, they're childish, they're all the same, and they're all just an adolescent power fantasy. And since 2000 you also have to add convoluted and confusing plots, rip-offs of past movies, fast, jerky editing during action sequences making it impossible to follow what is happening,  plot holes that would insult a gerbil's intelligence, and ridiculous amounts of unnecessary, over-the-top CGI.

I don't believe the superhero genre is as bad as you suggest. It is a large genre, and while there are stinkers in the category, there are some interesting selections as well. Elements of Captain America: The cινιℓ ωαr could be applied to the resistance versus the SSPX, which I found to be quite amusing.

  • The biggest issue with superhero movies from a male perspective is all the skin tight, revealing clothing that almost all females wear. Then to add insult to injury one of the "heroes" in the Avengers is Scarlett Witch! With the overtly Satanic Dr. Strange and the Thanos storyline on the horizon it's only going to get worse.

It is a lost cause for the most part, unfortunately. If I had the ability I'd recast some of the classics in a Catholic mold, but that's probably more effort than it's worth!
