  • Hello,
Has anyone had any success after a reversal, and if so, what advise can you give me?  And is there any Doctor's that will assist me without requiring a sample?  It has been over a year so far.  Thank you for your assistance and God bless!

  • I've never had the pleasure of having such an operation reversed, because I never had one in the first place.  So I wouldn't know directly.

However, I can tell you that the doctor is going to have a very hard time comprehending why you cannot provide a specimen, let's just say, in the way such specimens are normally obtained.  With rare exceptions (possibly an ultra-Orthodox Jєω or a really, really hard-shell evangelical), anyone else would just go ahead and "do the needful".  I understand that doctors even keep porn available to assist with matters as needed.

And they would be wrong.  I'd say to find a Catholic physician who comprehends this, and explain why you cannot do what is normally expected.  I'm pretty sure the usual method in these cases is to use a generously perforated condom (not so bad), have normal relations, and collect the sample that way, or to do the extraction by needle (ouch!).

  • Medically I can't even imagine needing a sample unless it is to check for success post surgery

So far as I am aware, there is nothing per se immoral about taking a sperm count or doing a sperm motility test, as long as the specimen is collected in a manner that does not run counter to Catholic moral principles.

It should be a very Catholic thing to want to increase one's ability to bring about the conception of a child.  I can tell you (never mind how I know this, I just know) that large doses of Robitussin (guaifenesin) increase the amounts of all kinds of mucus that the body produces (it will also give you the runs, but everything in life is a trade-off of one kind of another ;)), and not to add a TMI factor, but relations every other day, as opposed to every day, during the fertile period, can also increase the sperm count, for obvious reasons.

Not medical advice, just anecdotes about low-tech, low-cost potential fertility optimizing methods based on common sense, and let's just say that my son turned 14 yesterday, so something must have gone right.

  • Fertility after reversal vasectomy is at best maybe 15%.  What usually happens, the surgeon/doctor will say the surgery goes well.  Yeah, the surgery is 100%. But did the doctor explain about fertility?  did you ask before the surgery.  This info was given to me by Dr. Billings.

  • I think this is one of those cases where we need to refer you to a good, well-trained Catholic priest. One who was trained in the SSPX or equivalent dedicated Traditional pre-Vatican II seminary, with Thomistic philosophy and theology.

Not just any Trad priest, but one who was well trained in Thomistic moral theology. SSPX, Resistance, some Sedevacantist (Bp. Sanborn's seminary for example).

On second thought, I've met some "approved by Rome" or "convert to Tradition" priests who are either highly intelligent/educated, have a deep spiritual life, OR BOTH. The former make up quickly for lost time by burying themselves in books and quickly get up to speed. If their conversion was sincere, they quickly get into the true Catholic spirit -- they have the Faith after all -- and end up with a strong Sensus Catholicus.

But avoid garage priests/bishops, and that certainly includes anyone connected in any way to Fr. Pfeiffer in Boston, KY. Those seminarians are like "homeschooled" kids in a family with no discipline, where little-to-no schooling takes place.

Remember what St. Teresa of Avila said: she would rather have a learned confessor than a pious confessor, if she had to choose. You don't want ignorance or simplistic thinking in lieu of Catholic doctrine when it comes to a complex issue like this.
