  • I have a problem with learning to cook and it is embarrassing because everybody is using this against me whenever they want to make fun of me.
Well, I am just afraid of ovens, and for this reason, being 26 year old I cannot cook even the simplest of foods. Mom took me to a psychiatrist who said that I needed medicines while an other one says that it is not needed.
The hardest part is that even thinking about it makes me anxious, and disappointed. I wonder if I have a PTSD for ovens or not, but I can't remember any trauma related to a damage by ovens (like burning myself or seeing an other person burning himself).
(Note: I can cook everything if another person is in the kitchen watching and guiding me, but when alone, I don't dare touch the oven).
Do you know of any similar cases? How can it be overcome?

  • Just do it!   Not meaning to make light of your problem, but might it be when you were very young you took the story of Hansel and Gretel to serious.

  • Question: are you more scared of the oven itself as in its potential to burn you, etc., or are you more scared of using the oven to make things?

Are you worried that your food won't turn out right so you avoid using it altogether in order to not dissapoint yourself?

Justed wanted to ask a few questions before I throw out my ideas.

I find it interesting that you are fine with it when others are around. Maybe this is a confidence issue. In other areas of your life, do new things intimidate you?

Er, this is Jen51 speaking. I'm missing the button that makes me not post anonymously... I don't see it.

  • Well, I was afraid to light a match until I was in my mid twenties. I was afraid of the flame being so close to my finger. But then I made myself do it a few times and the fear went away. The best thing to do in situations of paranoia like this is to force yourself to confront tour fear. The more you make yourself use the oven, the less scary it will be.

  • Yeah, you have an irrational fear, so you need more faith in your reason.  Assuming, you know the oven isn't going to actually hurt you.  If you have some kind of supernatural fear of ovens (for example, possessed ovens, with razor sharp oven doors, which breath life extinguishing fire, when approached alone) then you need more faith in God and his protection.  I thought i read somewhere that for every demon there's like ten angels.

Ps:  at first i thought this thread was a joke, like you were pretending to be jewish and that you had a phobia of ovens   :jester:

Yes there is a fear of burning. But the ridiculous part is the anxiety. Whenever I decide to approach the oven and face my fears I feel breathless as if my heart is beating faster than normal. then I can't think correctly, just quit the kitchen very quickly. When you are so stressed the food never turns out right.
I have been subjected to so much ridicule that I feel nervous and defensive whenever any one points to this issue.

  • Perhaps the fear comes from a person knowinling steeped in mortal sin and that
he knows that if he remains in that state that he will fall into the everlasting
oven known as HELL for all eternity.
