  • What do you think about running your own families as democracies with every member entitled to one vote. The father can reccomend but it is the family that collectively decides.  All decisions are decided by vote. This is for fathers.  What do you think of this model of family government?

  • I think it is stupid. The Father should lead.

  • How many papal encyclical, letters, catechisms, et al, can be listed that totally condemn democracy and spell out explicitly that the father ALONE is the leader of the family.  His authority flows directly from GOD not from a family consensus.

Key words:  democracy, vote, collective, entitled, decide, government

  • Violates the Fourth Commandment.

You'll probably be free sooner than you like.

Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

  • It's quite the opposite in our home: Our children can make recommendations and provide input but it is ultimately my decision after consultation with my wife. "Democracy" should be an alien concept in a Catholic home.
"This principle is most certain: The non-Christian cannot in any way be Pope. The reason for this is that he cannot be head of what he is not a member. Now, he who is not a Christian is not a member of the Church, and a manifest heretic is not a Christian, as is clearly taught by St. Cyprian, St. Athanasius, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and others. Therefore, the manifest heretic cannot be Pope." -- St. Robert Bellarmine

  • This is a really silly idea.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

  • The one described (but not, I think, advocated) in the original post, NOT the one in the post by Charlemagne, with is the furthest thing from silly.

  •   :drillsergeant:
When we children got out of line or suggested we had "rights," our Dad would say, "This family is not a democracy.  It's a benevolent dictatorship.  The Benevolent Dictator has dictated!  Now follow the orders."  Woe to the child who didn't snap to it!
(The family democracy is a great idea if you want your children to run you over on the way to losing their souls.)

St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • My dad (who failed to lead the family) would yell in moments of frustration "This is not a democracy."  He was undermined by my mother at every turn.
