Title: Families Amish like dress
Post by: Änσnymσus on March 12, 2018, 05:17:16 PM
I notice a lot of trads in SSPX churches wear clothes that looks like Amish attire. Why is that?

That is an American thing. Most likely, because of the country's Puritan roots.

What does this Amish attire look like that  "a lot" trads wear at the SSPX chapel that you go to? Some pictures. Are they young people boys and girls or the elderly, or everybody?

Either you have no idea what Amish clothing looks like, or you don't attend an SSPX chapel.

I second that!
Our sspx looks more like Fri night at the bar.
Right, I've seen casual at various chapels.  Friday night at the bar, you have got to be kidding me.  Over-exaggerating and over-zealous. #Amishlife

Maybe OP meant to say ‘prairie’ instead of ‘Amish’. Some trad women dress in old fashioned prairie dresses, it’s the closest thing to Amish I can think of.

One thing about the Amish women and girls is that the sneakers with the dress is not very feminine. Ick.  There are many comfortable Maryjanes or boots that are girly.

I like the Menonnite dresses better.

I have not seen that at SSPX's parishes and I am in St. Marys, and have been to Winnoa, Post Falls and various California parishes. Each parish you will see dresses and styles of various kinds and sizes (and none Amish), unfortunately it tends to mostly short and tight.

Probably because this is the United States, and not Europe or South America. Prairie clothing has somewhat of a history here. I happen to like prairie clothing, even though I've never worn it.
There are a couple of women who wear prairie clothing at the SSPX chapel here. I think it looks quite nice.

You can be contemporary yet modest.  I think those who dress "old fashioned" are just trying to call attention to themselves.  "Look at me, I hope you will think I am holy because I eschew contemporary clothing".

Why is the wearing of modest contemporary clothing so important to you? Why must the modest clothing be contemporary?

Prairie dresses, cool loose cotton, covers what needs to be, comfortable. It is a sin of pride to be overly fastidious about 'fashion'.

People have forgotten how modest Catholics used to dress to mass, so they copy the dress styles of other very conservative religious communities.

Because you have never been to an SSPX chapel in your life.

Back in 1994 there was a huge group of SSPX homeschoolers who decided to move en masse to Idaho because they wanted to be near a school staffed by SSPX nuns. As they explained, their older high school children no longer wanted to homeschool but wanted to attend a regular high school. However, there was no regular high school they could attend except private Novus Ordo schools, private boarding schools, or public schools, all of which were teaching abortion.

This particular group dressed very modestly and reminded me of The Little House on the Prairie, but my young son was really turned off by their attire as the older girls could not really play sports in fear of tearing their dresses. Likewise, the boys feared getting holes in the knees of their slacks, so these children were prevented from playing outside.  Thus, in the words of my son, the events were boring.  Nevertheless, I thought that the baby outfits were darling.

Someone wrote to me and asked to post this; she was having trouble attaching the image.
