  • Hi,

My small family (me, wife and son) will be meeting with a Traditional Priest at a restaurant. Please excuse my ignorance but grew up with N.O. and greeting Priests has always been very casual. What is the proper way to greet him? Do we kiss his hand? do we refer to him as Reverent Father [name]? or just Father [name]? Am I overthinking it?

    Thank you

  • We call the priest “Father”.   (No need to kiss his hand.)  I’m sure he will say Grace.  When you all leave, ask him for a blessing.

Call him Father and last name.

    Thank you

    - ask him to say grace, while everyone stands
    - call him Rr. <lastname>, unless he is to be called Fr. <firstname>, as some orders do (ex, benedictine)
    - make sure his wine glass is never empty
    - relax and remember he is a man

(You kiss the ring of a bishop, never the hand of any religious.)

  • If you get there before he does, make sure you stand when he enters and leaves the room.

I would wait for him in the parking lot or in your car, when he arrives you all walk in together. You greet him by shaking his hand and say "Hello Father Williamson" or whatever his last name is. After that, just call him "Father".

  • Give him a big bear hug and then challenge him to feats of strength.

  • Never be alone with him. It will compromise both of your purities.

  • I met with a priest years ago at a restaurant twice to discuss family issues and both times he paid for my meal.  Not sure why he wanted to meet at a restaurant other than it was a public place. I am a woman and his behavior was totally appropriate but paying for my meal felt weird.

  • Thank you all for you advice, the dinner went very well. As someone pointed out, you need to relax and remember that he is a man (who happens to hear my confessions ).

Turns out he went to regular college and had regular jobs before seeking the priesthood. I think those experiences make him well rounded in a variety of subjects.
