  • Is there anything questionable about electric votive candles as a replacement for actual flame votive candles?

Years ago a former parish priest removed the votive candles because he was concerned of the fire hazards associated with leaving candles unattended for most of a week.  The only candle which has since burned continuously in the church is the sanctuary lamp.

  • I think they are tacky, but I am not sure there is a moral issue involved.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

  • In many military chapels, one will find, not only electric votive candles, but, an electric Sanctuary Lamp.

I asked a chaplain about it and was told that fire prevention regulations absolutely prohibit unattended flames in the chapels on military reservations.  I asked if this was really ok with the Church.  He told me it didn't really matter because he couldn't have a lit candle anyway.

true enough ,if there is a legit worry over safety,etc.....not sure what rubrics/rules are on that, if any formal.....

used to go to a EC Chapel, they used sand in stands and small, skinny candles, a few times, went over or close to it....pluse with hay on floor (for Christmas/manger), a few hand hel candles came close.....FD had to step in...
