  • My son's fiance is having ovarian issues. Some women in her family have had serious fertility problems. Is it permissible to have the eggs frozen for future use after marriage as technology now permits?

  • IVF is not permitted to Catholics. It messes with life in almost the same way that abortion does.  Yes, abortion.  What happens to all the unused zygotes when they fertilize a batch?  And women weren't meant to have "litters" of 4 or 5 children after they're impregnated with so many fertilized eggs and given fertility drugs.

Ultimately, they want her to choose to "selectively abort" some of them, before and/or after they are implanted.

The whole process is not pro-life, any more than abortion is.

  • No.  As Matthew has pointed out, Church teaching is quite clear that IVF and other artificial means of conception are immoral.

Natural conception to natural death is now life should be.

  • Ovarian stimulation is a dangerous procedure, and with the sinful intention of practicing IVF.

    This from an IVF doctor
    Quote
A recent confidential inquiry into maternal deaths in the UK showed that OHSS (ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome) was now one of the biggest causes of maternal mortality in England and Wales.

  • Yes, it is dangerous for mother, and zygotes are picked over and thrown away.  Even then, babies born can have abnomalies.  It is playing God.  What is the problem with ovulation?  Everything begins in the brain.  The brain is what sends messages for the ovary to ovulate.  Start there.

  • For goodness sakes! This couple is not even married yet.
Why not just act as normal people do and wait and see what happens. If after a year or so they are concerned with the possiblity of sub- or infertility, then go to see an advisor for Naprotechnology. But don't put the pressure on. Let them sort it out.

Seeing this was in the women's only thread, I thought it was a food preservation question!  But think of it this way, are women chickens whose eggs may be harvested and frozen for later use?!!!  Shouldn't nature itself tell a person that we shouldn't treat people as farm animals for breeding purposes?  This practice may be fine if you're breeding race horses or dairy cows, but humans, God forbid!
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • I am OP- Thanks for the answers so far. It was not meant to be a frivolous question. If the girl has to have her ovaries removed, and egg-freezing is forbidden, then they will not have natural children. That could be an important thing to think about before deciding whom to marry.

  • Discourage this young woman from any drastic surgical treatment such as removal of the ovaries, until she has thoroughly checked out alternative treatments.

I thought they meant chicken eggs too.

    Prayers to the young girl.
