  • When you become drunk or guzzle it gluttonously.

Or if you're behind the wheel of a car.  Working dangerous equipment.

  • I drink beer most nights before I go to bed. It makes me feel good and it helps me go to sleep. But I never drink enough to get drunk. Do you think this is sinful?

I usually drink three beers. And I drink these over a period of about two and a half to three hours.

At my tolerance level, when I drink this amount I can feel it a little, but I do not get close to losing the use of reason.

  • You should cut back to two beers.

Women should cut back to one.

I've heard someone justify drinking six beers and saying they hardly felt it.

  • It's sinful when you drink enough of it that it effects your judgement.  If it causes small errors in your judgement, it is venially sinful.  If it causes graves errors in judgement, it is mortally sinful.  If you drink frequently enough that it causes minor health issues, it is venially sinful.  Major health problems, which you are aware of while you are doing it, and it's mortally sinful.

If none of the above, it's not sinful at all.  However, if you have a weakness with regards to it, then it demonstrates a lack in the virtue of moderation.  It is therefore a vice, which in itself is not sinful, but by definition, can easily lead you into sin.

If you have the above-mentioned weakness regarding alcohol consumption, then it will be a barrier to advancement in spirituality.  If that is the case, and you want to advance spiritually, you should deny yourself that which you crave and offer the struggle up.  The destruction of vices will enable you to work on your prayer life.

  • Objectively speaking, it wouldn't seem rational to be upset with a relative, say a husband or wife, drinking two or one drinks each night respectively.

Women (should be) smaller than men and have reduced tolerance.  I would think there's something wrong if a woman wanted to drink 24 ounces of beer a night.  Or if a man wants to drink more than a pint and a half.

  • It would be sinful if the cost for buying it would unduly take away from what your family needs in regards to food, cloths and shelter.

If you can afford beer all month but have trouble paying any bills, better quit the beer.

  •  :cheers:Too much is when you may be unsafe to drive or are buzzed enough to be no longer in full control yourself.  Also, if you drink as a form of self-medicating.  IMO, a beer on occasion to relax with friends or because you like the beverage itself isn't sinful.  If you NEED beer to function, you have an alcohol addiction that can only progress downhill.

  • Typically it's said that it's a sin once one loses his faculties of reasoning.

But what exactly constitutes that?  Is it doing something that isn't reasonable?  Because I know that I would probably have enough beer to pass out before I would have enough beer to do something unreasonable.  But I know that it would be sinful to drink that much.

When it's Budweiser or anything with Lite in it.
