  • When you buy metrocards from vending machines in NY, they give you dollar coins for change. They are common. But for some reason I think you are talking about another kind of dollar coin.

I don't remember seeing that one. I have seen a variety of others. There isn't just one, but a variety, kind of like the backs of quarters.

  • A long time ago I asked for some at the bank because we were learning money. I don't remember what was on them.

  • The common coins that circulate are pennies, nickels, dimes, and
    quarter dollars.
I have not seen a Kennedy Half Dollar or any dollar coins in
    circulation in many years.
The government still mints the Kennedy half dollar in the
millions, and even if you ask your local bank, they do not
    have any.
I remember back in the days of 90% silver coins that were
circulating, if you spent a $5.00 bill, and get half of it back
in change, it would most likely included a half dollar.
Those were also the days that you could take a dollar bill
to any bank and exchange it for a Morgan or a Peace 90%
    Silver Dollar.

  • I have.  In fact, we often use dollar coins for small purchases just to mess with the stores which don't seem to like them at all.

I used a dollar coin once at a fast food restaurant along with a $2.00 bill.  The kid looked at them and asked the manager if they were ok.  The manager told him it was ok.  The only time I ever received a $2.00 bill in change was at the Washington State Ferry dock because the fare was exactly $2.00 shy of a larger bill (don't remember which one) and the clerk had $2.00 bills to give as change.  I've never received a dollar coin in change.

    Why are you asking?

I haven't seen such a coin in years so I wondered if there was any chance their circulation was increasing.

    Just idle curiosity.
