Do We Have to Read the News?

  • The news sites are always a mix of politics, entertainment, gossip and horrid murders and other salacious crimes... with some "business, technology, health thrown in for good measure.

There is no filter on what is presented on these sites and even if one tries to only read politics or news that pertain to ones life as a citizen, it's virtually impossible not to read other headlines, captions and sidebars.

Do we have to keep up with the news in any form?  I'm conflicted about the perceived need to stay informed and the desire to avoid being corrupted by the filth, depravity and godlessness of our culture.

  • OP - You make a good point.  But, I think that we do need to keep up with the news to a certain degree.  Instead of shutting out the news altogether, I think that you should look for a better news outlet.

    I agree.

For example. X22Report.com is a daily podcast about 35-45 minutes long, you can listen to it while you fix the car or make dinner. But more important than the convenience is the CONTENT.

He basically talks about everything touching on real economic news, the global politics that matters (wars in the making, what the USA is trying to pull this week, etc.) and he never talks about stupid celebrities and salacious stuff.

When he talks about a local news situation (e.g., Ferguson Riots) it's always through the lens of how it will impact us and our freedom long-term.

This is my main source of news.

Another good one is Cryptogon.com -- he prides himself on being a "filter" to filter out all the noise, providing only the important headlines that matter. His last name is Flaherty, but he's not a Catholic. However, he is very down to earth and lives on some acreage in New Zealand. He's is anti-GMO, anti-vaccine, anti-public schools, pro-midwife, pro-homeschool, anti-computers for babies and very sane in everything except religion!

No, not really.  Stop tuning into Drudge if it's getting to you.  We all know the score when it comes to the world's overall direction.  We know what's coming.  We shouldn't be surprised by any of the stupid things that are happening throughout the world and all around us.  It is the natural result of a world that abandon's Christ.

Padre Pio never checked the news, and people were astounded that he already seemed to possess a knowledge of what has happening in the world.

Whether he had the gift of prophecy, or whether he simply knew how the world worked...the lesson Padre Pio teaches us in this matter is that we can function peacefully as saints in this life without obsessing about the news.
    .........................

Before some audiences not even the possession of the exactest knowledge will make it easy for what we say to produce conviction. For argument based on knowledge implies instruction, and there are people whom one cannot instruct.  - Aristotle

  • Laramiehirsch - I don't think padre pio is the best example.  Padre pio was very involved with the local people/community.  For secluded religious, it would be different.  But, the poster is probably not one.  And, the OP apparently is a bit soft.  What padre pio had to suffer(visions of and encounters with the devil under many shapes and forms on a daily basis) is certainly not preferable to what we all suffer with the daily news.  So, I think it wise to keep the advice somewhere within reason.

The OP will probably benefit from limiting the intake of news.   But, this takes discipline.  Perhaps only view the news every other day, or every two days.  And, avoid the provocative news sites.

Certainly avoid all TV-based news. As for the internet, I would avoid Fox News and CNN. There are too many click bait articles. For example when sex is mentioned they are more likely to get clicks. So they make sure to have some salacious headlines.

I would suggest an alt-news site, like Matthew mentioned above.

Your local news is fine and tends to stay fairly unbiased. I'd stay away from most of the national stations, though.

  • I agree with Laramie.

No need to know anything as nothing changes except the name and the faces.

Still murder and war and hatred and more violence than ever.

If anything of earth shattering importance is going on, you'll know.

    Until then, be at peace.

  • Several people have already said the news really isn't the news and I agree. Is the news really actually news? Or is it merely just temptation disguised as a form of self enlightenment of the times.

  • I like LifeSiteNews (despite that they banned me from their Disquis combox for mentioning Jєωs and abortion…). The past few years they've become more overtly Catholic and, very recently, critical of Francis. One problem with them is that they don't use the more descriptive, accurate word "sodomite."

All news stations are owned by the same small group of antichrists, and they all run off basically the same script (often even verbatim the same script), with the same sound-bites.

  • There is no requirement to read the news and, in today's world, the desire to read the news is almost like going to porn sites.
