  • I recently have been working extra hard to follow Christ, frequenting the sacraments more / spiritual readings / rosary etc, however I now feel as if the devil is trying to attack my beliefs by forcing intrusive thoughts of doubt and blasphemies at times into my head. Most recently I’ve gotten hung up on trying to understand the trinity 100% which I know we cannot do with our limited minds, but I feel as if my mind is like a mouse on a wheel constantly running in circles about this. Please advise me on what to do, God Bless

  • I don't know if it's the devil or if you have a mind that's prone to such things.  I would recommend that you stop trying to understand the Holy Trinity.  I avoid such matters, including things like the subject of predestination (which many greater minds than mine have failed to agree on), etc.  I feel that it's pointless.  I accept the teaching of the Church on these mysteries, and understand the correct and incorrect ways of expressing them, but I know they're true on faith, not because I understand them, and that's good enough for me.  And, given the problems it's causing you, you too should leave it at that.  This little mouse running on the wheel sounds like you may have a touch of OCD, and combining OCD to understand something and a mystery such as that of the Holy Trinity are not a good combination.

    Sometimes people attribute a little too much to the devil, where most of the time it's the world and and the flesh, and very often we trip ourselves up.

    In short, I advise for you to stop trying to understand the Holy Trinity and other such mysteries.

  • Here's one telling of the famous story about St. Augustine:
    Quote
    It was around the year 415 and St. Augustine was walking along the beach on a bright, sunny day. He was frustrated, having taken a break from working on what’s become known as one of his greatest doctrinal contributions to the Church, De Trinitate, or “On the Trinity.” The subject matter had left him bleary-eyed – in need of fresh air.

    It was in this moment, as the frothy tide rushed out, that a little boy caught St. Augustine’s eye. The freckle-faced child had a determined, furrowed brow. He was clearly up to something, running back-and-forth, back-and-forth, between the sea and a tiny hole in the ground.

    “My son,” St. Augustine called over the crashing waves, “What are you doing there?”

    The boy held up the pink shell he was using to move water, “I’m trying to fit that great big ocean into this tiny hole,” he yelled, pointing assertively at the sand.

    St. Augustine smiled, charmed by the child’s innocence, his bright eyes, the way sunlight shone in his curly hair. He then followed the boy to kneel beside the tiny hole, watching him spill out a few meager drops.

    “My child,” the bishop of Hippo broke the news gently, turning the boy’s skinny shoulders to face the sea. He then spread his own arms wide, “You could never fit this great, magnificent ocean into that tiny hole!”

    The child didn’t flinch, but responded quickly: “And you could never possibly understand the Holy Trinity.” Then in a flash, the boy disappeared.

  • Proofs of the Trinity can be found throughout the bible, and it makes sense that there be more than one person so that God can be loved perfectly, since created things can't love him perfectly. Much beyond that, the Holy Trinity is frustratingly impossible to come anywhere close to understanding without much more divine revelation. Hopefully it will make a lot more sense in heaven.

  • I wonder: have you read anything concerning the Blessed Trinity?  I think Lad's advice is good if you have a decent understanding of it and are agonizing over minutia such as virtual vs formal vs real distinctions or how spiration is to he distinguished from generation... or even more so if you are having actual doubts as to the dogma itself.
    But if you only have a bare outline of the doctrine of the Trinity in your possession, and you find yourself wondering about its inner workings, it may be good to read more about this mystery, which while incomprehensible is nonetheless possible to see in a clearer light with study and prayer.  I think it depends on the nature of the temptation and your current level of knowledge.

    I accedently posted this anonymously.  Also, having reread your initial post it seems this is more of a temptation against the faith.  If that is the case, Lad is definitely correct and it's best to simply make an act of Faith and humility.  These temptations are not sinful and are a source of great merit if resisted.  St Francis De Slaes speaks of them as barking dogs which can do nothing to harm you unless you let them in.  Let them bark, and offer it up.

    As Lad already touched on, it may not be demonic in origin, though that is not impossible either. Man is a complex being; rational soul composite with a physical body, so what is actually a physical or chemical problem can present as spiritual.
    My 2 cents would be to look into physical/chemical as possible causes first:
    When was the last time you got some fresh air and exercise?
    Are you taking any drugs or supplements of any kind?
    Any symptoms of a vitamin or mineral deficiency?
    Etc.
    May God bless you as well.

  • When I was converting to tradition I suffered for half a year with intrusive, involuntary blasphemous thoughts about the Blessed Virgin Mary.  I tried many diversions when it happened but the day that the thoughts immediately changed to ѕυιcιdє to bring an end to my suffering I knew it was a spiritual attack.  The thoughts themselves if you don't consent to them are not sinful even though they are very disturbing. I began offering them for the benefit of someone else's conversion. While that person didn't convert I did get through that and it increased my spiritual strength.

    Though a scrupulous person might think that the dogs are barking because they touched them (even if they didn't).

  • How did Christ take on Satan when he prayed and fasted?  He replied to Satan Truth.  Satan: bow before me, no only to God.  If you are the Son of God turn the stone to bread. Man does not live by bread alone.  etc.

    I decided to try this out.  Devil gives thoughts of my husbands pass, I remind the demon, my husbands sins are gone, white.  When you reply with Truth, you are saying to yourself, you are with Truth.

  • Pray the Saint Patrick's breastplate every morning.

    I bind unto myself today
    The strong Name of the Trinity,
    By invocation of the same,
    The Three in One and One in Three.

    I bind this day to me for ever.
    By power of faith, Christ's incarnation;
    His baptism in the Jordan river;
    His death on Cross for my salvation;
    His bursting from the spicèd tomb;
    His riding up the heavenly way;
    His coming at the day of doom;
    I bind unto myself today.

    I bind unto myself the power
    Of the great love of the cherubim;
    The sweet 'well done' in judgment hour,
    The service of the seraphim,
    Confessors' faith, Apostles' word,
    The Patriarchs' prayers, the Prophets' scrolls,
    All good deeds done unto the Lord,
    And purity of virgin souls.

    I bind unto myself today
    The virtues of the starlit heaven,
    The glorious sun's life-giving ray,
    The whiteness of the moon at even,
    The flashing of the lightning free,
    The whirling wind's tempestuous shocks,
    The stable earth, the deep salt sea,
    Around the old eternal rocks.

    I bind unto myself today
    The power of God to hold and lead,
    His eye to watch, His might to stay,
    His ear to hearken to my need.
    The wisdom of my God to teach,
    His hand to guide, His shield to ward,
    The word of God to give me speech,
    His heavenly host to be my guard.

    Against the demon snares of sin,
    The vice that gives temptation force,
    The natural lusts that war within,
    The hostile men that mar my course;
    Or few or many, far or nigh,
    In every place and in all hours,
    Against their fierce hostility,
    I bind to me these holy powers.

    Against all Satan's spells and wiles,
    Against false words of heresy,
    Against the knowledge that defiles,
    Against the heart's idolatry,
    Against the wizard's evil craft,
    Against the death wound and the burning,
    The choking wave and the poisoned shaft,
    Protect me, Christ, till Thy returning.

    Christ be with me, Christ within me,
    Christ behind me, Christ before me,
    Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
    Christ to comfort and restore me.
    Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
    Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
    Christ in hearts of all that love me,
    Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

    I bind unto myself the Name,
    The strong Name of the Trinity;
    By invocation of the same.
    The Three in One, and One in Three,
    Of Whom all nature hath creation,
    Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
    Praise to the Lord of my salvation,
    Salvation is of Christ the Lord. Amen.
