  • I've got a denim skirt that I really like (and my sisters say makes me look like a spinster, but what do they know about spinsters?).  Anyway, I just bought the thing from the thrift store and I was going to wear it to Mass this Sunday.

However, I was wondering if this is OK?  Obviously men don't wear jeans to church- is this a female equivalent of jeans?

It's very modest, so that's not a problem, just the fabric I was wondering about.

  • I wouldn't wear denim (skirt or jacket) to Mass because I personally find the look a bit too casual. I have seen others wear them, though, so I think that's up for debate.
May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable,
most incomprehensible and ineffable Name of God
be forever praised, blessed, loved, adored
and glorified in Heaven, on earth,
    and under the earth,
by all the creatures of God,
    and by the Sacred Heart

    I wouldn't object to it.

  • St. Thomas More advises us to wear our best on Sundays.

While in prison awaiting execution, he asked his guards to allow him to dress in his Sunday best.

The guards asked him why he was doing it because no one would see him in his cell.  He replied that God would see him.

PS If your denim skirt is your favorite most modest skirt, it still may be okay to wear it.

  • The only denim skirt I have which I wouldn't wear to Mass is one made from a pair of jeans. The others were intended to be skirts and are dressy, imo, when paired with an appropriate top.

  • I wouldn't, but that's mainly because I'm a man.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • Generally we were always discouraged from wearing jean skirts to Mass since they are the equivalent to jeans for a man. Yes, they can be dressed up but they are still just dressed up casual, not necessarily dressy.

If it's all you have, no one will kick you out for it, but if you have dressier clothes, I would recommend wearing them instead.

  • I've worn a denim skirt to Mass once, but it was because someone gifted me with one and they wanted to see me wear it. Normally I would feel a bit underdressed in denim at Mass. But I've seen plenty of women do it and I've thought nothing of it.

In other words.... I don't know. Sorry I'm not much help!

100% cotton denim is a woven fabric so it's more modest than other fabrics that stretch and cling but it's associated with rebellion and casual dress (and homeschool potlucks  :laugh1:) in our culture. If you have something nicer for your "Sunday Best" I would try to get that ready on Saturday for Mass.

Homemade dresses are your best bet for a modest wardrobe. I  encourage you learn to sew your own dresses.

  • Unless the skirt is your "Sunday Best," I'd save it for some other occasion.  The only time I've worn denim to Sunday Mass was on a camping retreat.  The Mass was outdoors beside a river in the Adirondacks.  If we are reduced to having secret Masses in the woods or in subway tunnels, denim will be perfect to throw off the pursuivants. The exception would be if the skirt is truly dressy, but of a denim-like cloth.
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

You might be able to get away with it over at FE if you have a mind to.

Regarding the actual topic, if the denim skirt is not immodest, it would be permissible.  However, if denim jeans on men would be regarded as too casual, a denim skirt would be to.  People should wear their Sunday best on Sundays and holy days.  on a weekday is seems fine to me.

  • One pitfall with Sundays Best clothing is that one may end up treating life differently inside Church. I think the key is to not treat any other situation better than one treats Mass. Ie, one should wear their best at Mass if they have such diverse clothing.

For people who do not have a range of clothes, wearing the newest or cleanest of what one has is the "best" one can do.

Watch out for Respect of Persons. Wearing a modest denim skirt is better than wearing a finer less modest skirt. The last thing one probably wants is to be a severe distraction and possible occasion of skin for men sitting in the pews behind oneself. It is more than just length.

  • I wouldn't recommend it for Sunday mass because it is casual, but it would be fine for a weekday mass. If it is all you have for a modest skirt, wear it on Sundays until something better within your means comes along.

  • This is the OP.

Thank you for all the responses.  It sounds like it is acceptable, but not ideal.

I only have a tiny handful of good dresses/skirts, and all are rather heavy for summer.  The denim skirt would be much cooler.  Like one poster mentioned, I really appreciate how it's made of a sufficient weight of fabric and not at all clingy.  Almost all the skirts and dresses I can find of acceptable length that are light enough for summer are of such clingy, lightweight fabric that I would never wear them even at home.  I can't afford to buy clothing outside of the thrift shops or else really on sale.

I wish I could sew well.  My mom never wanted to teach me how to sew and I've never could ask anybody else.  I'm not in a position to take a class.  Unfortunately too, fabric is quite expensive and at least at the beginning, I could see myself ruining some.

When I can find an opportunity to do so, I'll learn how.  I agree that is the best.  I wish our churches and chapels would gather some people together to teach us how to sew modest clothing.

I think I'll try to find a nice dressy blouse around here if I am going to wear the skirt.  The skirt is darker denim, and not faded at all, so it's a little dressier than some I've seen.  I want to be respectful of the One I'm visiting, but if I have to down-dress a little bit in favor of modesty first, and wait until something better comes along, then that's what I have to do.  I could wear a slightly dressier cordorouy dress I have, but I also don't want to pass out if it's really warm.  I guess I'll see what the weather's like.

    Thanks again!
