  • Does anyone have any experience with the emergency dried food that sees you through disasters - the food you live on when there is nothing in the stores, etc.  Cannot think of the actual name.  But there are so many brands out there!

    Which one do you buy??

Which one what? I just noticed you put freeze in the title but not in the question.
To see you over an emergency you can use dried fruits like apricots, dates, sultanas, and all sorts of nuts, oats, milk powder. Always have a supply in the pantry and to use when travelling.
But why do you have to hide in the anonymous section? Think someone might be after your stash?
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

  • Every year we plant a large garden and strive to preserve as much as we can through storage in root cellars, canning, dehydrating, freezing.  I also make cheese from our cows milk to see us through their dry spells....We're not "preppers" by any means, but my husband and I DO believe in providing as much as we can for our family without having to buy so much at the grocery store.

People used to actually survive without running to the store all the time!  Can you believe it?!

  • No - no one after my "stash" - yet!  I just don't want the people here who know me, to know I am asking this.

EXACTLY the type of reason there is an Anonymous section.

I am talking about survival food - not just canning tomatoes for use during the winter, etc.

It's the food in packages - or even cans - that you can make use of even months into an emergency.  You maybe add water, heat up if possible.

There are different companies and different brands offering this - which ones are good/best?  I have no experience in this.

  • I'm new to this as well, but i've found that 'mountain house' has been around for decades, so they're a good brand.  I'm sure there are others.

www.thereadystore.com  has good sales now and then.  Dehydrated/freezed dried food isn't cheap, but it's good for things you can't buy in cans (i.e. milk, cheese, veggies).

  • Well...you can always get Meals Ready to Eat at an Army/Navy surplus store.  "MRE's".

If you're more into do-it-yourself, you can buy actual can-canners, for metal cans, not just jars.  Those last longer and are more sturdy.  A good dehydrator is "Excalibur" brand, for drying your own soup mixes, etc, then you can air-seal them.  And there are ways to store vegs in metal drums, by removing the oxygen from the container, thus preventing oxidation.
