Confirmation without sponsors?

  • We would like Bishop Zendejas to conform our children, who are ready, but who have no sponsors.  We don’t have any resistance people near us, don’t know any SSPX people who would attend the confirmations, and would only be able to choose from Novus Ordo people or non-religious people.

If we can’t find worthy sponsors do we have to not get our kids confirmed?

  • Does Bp. Zendejas really make house calls with regards to Confirmations? Has he told you that's a possibility?

Because there is a certain minimum that you need -- for example, Confirmations always takes place during Mass. Do you have equipment and a place for Mass? At least one Altar server?

The problem you describe is one of the many reasons Confirmation is usually given at a chapel. It's not Extreme Unction, Holy Communion, or Penance (which is often brought to the sick or housebound). Even Baptism is done outside of Mass, and is about as simple for the priest as blessing something after Mass. Plus Baptism is necessary for salvation.

If you have already contacted Bp. Z, you can ask him about your problem finding a sponsor.

  • Given the circuмstances, might it not be possible to contact the bishop, or whomever does his administrative work for him, explain the situation, and see if someone could be asked to volunteer to be sponsors, even by proxy if need be?

If I'm understanding the procedure correctly, while it is nice for a confirmation sponsor (or, for that matter, godparent) to be someone who knows the child, someone who would take an interest in both his spiritual and temporal welfare, it's not absolutely necessary.  I know in the Novus Ordo, things get more "tutti-frutti" than that, laborious preparation, long-drawn-out procedure, "get up in each other's business", but that is their thing, not our thing.

I will welcome correction or refinement of my points, if there's anything lacking in them.

  • We ran into a similar problem with the Baptism of our youngest (#11).  We attend--when we can (4 hr drive one way)--an independent chapel.  We spoke to the priest about the situation and he graciously found someone to be sponsors.  I would suggest the same thing with a confirmation sponsor.  That being said, it would then be the responisiblity of the confirmand and sponsor to further develop the relationship.
