Confession for past mortal sins?
« on: February 13, 2024, 07:30:21 AM »
Ash Wednesday is very close and it's been less than a week since my last confession. I have remembered some past mortal sins since my last confession. I could go to confession before Ash Wednesday but it hasn't been at least a week since my last confession and my confessor has in past times told me not to go more than once a week unless I commit a mortal sin.

I have asked him and this forum before but I forget and am scrupulous. Should I wait until the full week to get to confession for past mortal sins? Technically I remembered a mortal sin before communion on Sunday but I know in those cases it's still fine to receive. I have not committed any new mortal sins (at least from what I'm aware of) since my last confession.

Sorry for asking this question again, I find with scruples that it takes me several attempts of the same thing to learn and remember it properly. For example bad thoughts, I had to go through the process of learning that a bad though isn't instantly a sin before I overcame my scruples in this regard. And hopefully I don't become complacent.

Once you remember an unconfessed past mortal sin, the obligation is to mention it the next time you go to Confession, but there's no obligation to go to Confession to remedy the situation ASAP.

You are not in a state of mortal sin due to a forgotten past sin.  I would heed your Confessor's instructions not to go more than once a week, unless you actually commit a NEW mortal sin (which is what he clearly had in mind).

Yes thank you, that is what I was thinking but I was getting a bit scrupulous as I know receiving communion unworthily is a grave sacrilege.
