  • My computer wouldn't boot when I tried to start it.

    Life is a pain sometimes.

  • unplug it and start over?  Shut down.  I get this rainbow circle that goes round and round and it takes a bit of hitting different buttons to get out.  The Story of My Life!

    round and round!

  • One of my drives developed random behavior, and the the computer was attempting to do a network boot for some reason.

I removed the faulty drive, re-installed my system, and changed the boot order to skip network booting entirely.

My motherboard may be on the fritz. I am on a budget and getting a new motherboard and CPU is not for the immediate future.

Remote backup would be your best bet, like to Google Drive or something.

That way you can have the NSA restore your data if it's lost.

  • I know it takes a bit more effort, but I prefer backing up to DVD(s).

DVDs would survive an EMP-shockwave or a flood -- but not a fire or getting severely scratched. So be careful with them.

If you buy them in bulk, they're only about 25 cents each; maybe less.

And what I like about DVDs is getting a long-term backup of my data that's easily accessible by any PC. If I do a backup every month, I'll have that many "snapshots" of my data.  I can go back 3 months, 4 months, etc. and I have a choice. Sometimes that really comes in handy.

Some of the earlier posters sound like they need to evaluate their security practices. You know, when you get a fake invoice for a big screen TV, you delete it! You don't click on the links.

Likewise, when a Nigerian prince's widow, or the "barrister" thereof, writes to you asking for help with money transfers...

C'mon. Really? This is not a concern for most people...the same people who do not understand at all how computers work and do not realize the simple basics of what information is available about you when you visit any website. Or who think deleting a file and formatting the disc makes that file "gone" (I've recovered such files for people who thought all was lost).

For remote backup, archive it, encrypt it with AES with a 256 bit key length, and nobody will get into it.

Although, for certain things, like cross-stitch patterns probably, public backup is good too if the contents are not restricted.

Writable optical media can degrade, as it is written to dye layer on the disc, not a physical disc. I do not know how long that takes, but for long term storage, optical discs should be carefully watched.

Also, remote backup is necessary for any critical data.

Thank you! Would drop box be an example of that?

Yes. I never used it though.

If one has a Microsoft (Live, or whatever they call it these days) or Google account, one has access to such a service already (Google Drive or SkyDrive).

For files you do not want others to see, it is best to archive them and encrypt them. Compression is a good idea too.
