  • I don't normally post anonymously ever, but I thought I'd just say what I've probably previously stated in a non-anonymous post, where I say that I downthumb people that complain when their post is downthumbed.

Downthumbing is a reality, whether you feel it's deserved or not. Complaining about it, only makes you look bad, in my opinion, or writing a post expressly asking why your post was downthumbed also merits one from me. Or then subsequently saying "Oh so I get another downthumb." Ugh. That's worse than the person doing the actual downthumbing of a nicely thought out opinion.

Not everyone is going to agree with what you're saying. That's just a fact of life. Get over it, and quit moaning and groaning when you feel you've written a nice post, but someone happens to disagree with your way of thinking.

  • I don't like it when people complain about down thumbs either. But it doesn't bother me that much.

  • I don't mind being down thumbed when people actually disagree with what I say in a particular post.  I am irritated by people down thumbing prayer requests of stand along quotes from saints  becasue of who the poster is.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

Personally, I think the option of "rating" a post is stupid to begin with. Forums are for discussion. That being said, if someone's going to downthumb a post then they should at least have the maturity and charity to explain why they disagree with what's been said, especially when disagreeing with a prophecy or saint/papal quote that's in perfect harmony with Catholic teaching.

That's the whole point of the rating system!  So that you can express general agreement or general disagreement with a particular post without having to make a statement.

  • Down-thumbing doesn't bother me when it is express disagreement with an idea.  It would be better to post WHY you disagree.  That way, there's some matter for continued discussion.  It does bother me when it is for prayer requests, or used as an anonymous form of name-calling or personal insult, or in response to factual information.  Example, I was once down-thumbed four times because I responded to a request for non-debateable factual information.  To me, that is a bit bizarre!

Good heavens, I am a terrible typist.  I corrected my errors.

As long as they cite the source of the quote, it shouldn't be a problem. Also, if the poster in question has things for which he or she ought to apologize or things they need to retract or clarify after tantrums or vile attacks on other members, then they should do so before doing "damage control" to their reputations by copying our beloved Poche's modus operandi (he gets down-thumbed a lot and he doesn't seems to care, and he actually does post the sources for his oftentimes good posts on Saints, though I haven't read any of his non-Saints posts).

Oftentimes, people just cite Scripture just to egg others on, or to ensnare their real or imagined adversaries.

I remember people getting down-voted for asking sources for the apocryphal prophecy attributed to St. Nilus. The only source I could find is some TAN book that cites no sources at all.

I would think that such a "prophecy" as that ascribed to St. Nilus or that ascribed to St. Nicholas Flue would have been widely discussed centuries before our grandparents were conceived, born and educated...

  • My biggest complaint about the downthumbing is that the same people consistently have posts that merit them. I get tired of downthumbing the same windbags, but maybe if I keep it up they will stop. It's tough work.
