Children swimming/modesty laws

  • I never gave much thought to setting up a swimming pool in the backyard for the kids (2-11); it seemed to be a good solution to the impurity at beaches and public pools.

But now I am wondering about the modesty of their attire:  certainly the boys would not go shirtless, but can they wear swim trunks, or must I send them into the pool wearing jeans!?

Do the modesty laws which prevent men from wearing shorts also prevent children from wearing them?

Should we just forget about the pool altogether, or is there some kind of solution?

Don’t want to be scrupulous, but don’t want to sin.

  • PS: Only our neighbors on left/right would be able to see the children.

  • I think having your own pool is great for your family.  For modesty and protection from too much sun, men and boys should wear swim shorts and swim t shirt or long sleeve.

  • You can put up fencing or shrubs for privacy from neighbors.

  • We don't have a pool, but we do let our children run through the sprinkler on occasion.  What we do: cut off jeans and t-shirts for boys, regular clothes for the girls (since they wear skirts all year round anyway, but in summer they're just below the knees).  The issue of adolescence hasn't come up yet; but in the next year or two I'll have to figure out about the girl situation.  Am giving that one some thought!

  • When I say cut-off jeans, they're right at knee level--where there knee holes were!   ;D

  • Use your good judgement for this particular situation but don't fall in the trap of puritanism. Examples of adult men attire where they show their knees for generations and not considered inmodest are kilts in Scotland and lederhosen in the Tyrol (Austria).  :)

  • The Society of St. John was very much against “Puritanism.”

  • The cries of “Puritanism” are the refuge of every moral libertine.

Are you sure they won't be scandalised by seeing 2 to 11 years olds in neck to knees? ;)

Sadly no pool but we do the same !
Boys shorts (hopefully not considered too scandalous) and tee shirts, girls in swimsuits (with a skirt) or dresses.
Agreed it would become more difficult as adolescence approaches but I suspect the days of running through the sprinkler will be over by then !
