  • My cousins, who are brother and sister, live together.  They are both unmarried, and in their 20s.  Their parents (my aunt and uncle) are deceased.  Recently, they were accused of committing scandal by a person who attends their chapel.  This person's accusation was that because they live together without a "chaperone," they are giving the impression that they are committing an ugly sin.

If this was an unrelated man or woman, I could understand the argument, but this is a BROTHER AND SISTER.  A brother and sister who have no living parents I might add.  Was I wrong in telling my cousins that they are doing nothing wrong, and that they should ignore the busy-body from their chapel?

  •  :-XThe persons who gave voice to such a thought must retract their statements to all who heard it, apologize to the brother and sister, and go to Confession with the firm amendment to get their minds out of the gutter.  I know three widowed sisters who live together.  Does that mean they're a lesbian threesome?  What about a single man who lives with and cares for his older disabled brother?  Nobody accuses them of being perverts.  What about Mary, Martha, and Lazarus?  Was something unseemly going on?

Does the priest know of this slanderous talk?  If it's chapel-wide, he needs to address and correct the situation.  Souls have been driven away from the Faith or have lost access to the Mass and Sacraments over such things.

Everyone who has heard the talk and is in a state of grace should be making reparation for the gossips.  There are still three days of Lent left.

  • My son and daughter shared an apt in their 20's.  Neither one got along well, but did so to get by $ and for our daughter to have her brother around helped so our daughter would not be alone, you know what I mean.  Both worked and were busy and our daughter was saving for marriage and she was happy to get away from her brother.  Mom

That scandal monger is more than a busy body, he is dangerous.  Go to the priest and ask him to intervene.
