  • I wonder if it is a sin to pray for bloody martyrdom. I do ask God for this, but is it prideful to think that God will choose you for such a great act of love and devotion?

I know that un-bloody martyrdom (being without the Most Holy Sacrament..of course) is just as torturous for me  ...but please just tell me if praying for bloody martyrdom is sinful or proud

  • Well that is the best way to die and a sure ticket to Heaven without a stay in purgatory so it is a good thing. I think saints have prayed for this grace in the past. I remember reading that St. Francis really wanted to be martyred but it wasn't to be.

  •  :fryingpan:
I'd ask a good priest about this one.  It could be pride, or sloth...or entirely sincere.

St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • It's probably fine to pray for it as long as you're praying to persevere it.  It is presumptuous to pray for martyrdom on the predication that you would persevere it.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • Occasionally I've been known to fixate on the torture and death of the martyrs, especially when I'm listening to or reading something that's especially animated about being willing to suffer for the faith.

I try to put those thoughts out, though; I know I must be risking falling into pride if I imagine, "well, since that'll be me one day..." when it most probably won't!

Well, people think of it is not only the highest honour, but somewhat easy.

    It isn't like that.

So many dream of a bloody martyrdom, but they cannot even make a little sacrifice of their will on the smallest matters.

It is severely misguided, although, it is a very common thing. Reflect on the saints who died peaceful deaths and submit to God's will, whether that be an uneventful life, or a torturous death.

This reveals some of the simplistic thinking which leads to such fantasies.

"ticket to Heaven". Salvation is from the grace of God, not our own acts. Purgatory is not a bad thing either.

The Circuмcellions would be good to study on this matter.

Everybody dies. The holiness of a martyr's death is not an accident. Treating it as an accident, a free pass, a ticket, is wrong thinking and it will lead to error. Naturally, most people do not pursue this thinking too far, and it remains just a common occasional fantasy, but it is the surface of something dangerous.

Being will to pick up one's cross and follow Christ, to suffer life in this world, to be reborn in the spirit, are what are good.

  • Martyrdom sounds good until I start thinking about having my eyes gouged out or my organs removed or being burned.  The reality sinks in (as much as it can) and I chicken out.

    I prefer a guillotine.

  • You can ask God for martyrdom but your growth in holiness is greatest when you accept the martyrdom he gives you.
