Grain beverages can work as a substitute, unless you're particular about flavor. For me, it's mostly the colour and consistency that I need in a substitute.
When you came off coffee, you said you felt calm and optimistic. Optimistic is what I am wondering about. Are you saying, you were feeling down/depressed maybe when on coffee? How much did you drink in a day?
