Are Catholics allowed to go to school dances or is it strongly not advised?

It really depends what kind of school you attend. This past year I attended the homecoming dance at my highschool and since it was big supervised dance my parents let me go, and it was really fun as long as you have somebody to go with like a friend.

So yes Catholics can attend school dances.

As a parent i would not recommend it. I'm sure it's going to be filled with peers dressed immodestly and music with immoral lyrics. Perhaps you could ask your parents if they could take you and friend or two out for pizza instead.

With the kind of music that is played at these things, it's really not advised to attend such things. The awful dress is another thing. Such immodest things that people wear, and hardly becoming a place for a traditional Catholic youth! All good advice.

I'm thinking of what St. Francis de Sales said about dancing... He said basically it was okay as long as you did not take delight in it.

However, I think if he saw the status of contemporary America, he's nix the idea!

When I went to my highschool prom my parents let me go as long as I did not dance with any boys :dancing:

Dancing is not evil per se however it very much depends on the type of dancing, the people who are taking part, the atmosphere, the type of music, the dress.

That was really cute! But the kind of dancing I'm talking about is modern dancing where you all crowd onto a dancfloor and "move" to the the blaring pop music. And all the girls wear strapless dresses that they have to keep pulling up every few seconds. I have decided that after much thought and reading everyone's replys, I am not going to attend prom

It's not OK to go to these dances. Period.

There is a large amount of condemnation of dancing in from saints and in Church writings and Councils.

Good choice. Prom is overrated. I went to both Catholic and Public school proms and they were all bad and inappropriate. Our Catholic school after prom lock-in was the worst. Adults who organize this stuff are so naive.

Beyond the immodesty, prom has become very expensive and competitive. Dresses are pricey, and most girls feel the need for professional hair, nails etc. Then the poor young men have to pay for dinner, rent a tux, pitch in for a limo or find a sports car. It's all so materialistic and nauseating.

If you have a group of girlfriends that wants to stay in you could have a scrapbooking party or game night with appetizers and ice cream, or dress up and do your own formal dinner.

The children in video are adorable. Square dancing was always my favorite activity in gym class. :smile:

My teenage daughter participated in some neo-trad social dances, at my naive request

I noticed that dance program can easily change depending upon the agenda of the DJ.

In one trad dance, they children were supposed to be doing traditional ballroom dances (Waltz, Polka, Tango... etc.). However, by the end of the evening, the DJ changed the music.

It became increasingly modern, with some rap thrown in for good measure.
At the end, he played the gαy party song, "YMCA".

Under the blare of the music, I approached a neo-trad mother who was supervising the dance and jokingly said, Why is the DJ playing a song which is the ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖ's battle-cry".

She replied, "The song is whatever you want it to mean".

It was another lesson that: "Trads will never agree on anything".

How does the thinking behind "no dancing" square up with " A time to weep, and a time to laugh. A time to mourn, and a time to dance" ?

I cannot cook dinner without twirling around the kitchen.

The only differences between proms at my Novus Ordo HS and the public ones were slightly milder music (modern pop music but "edited" lyrics) and a "dress code" that wasn't even enforced.
