Archbishop Lefebvre and purgatory

  • I had a thought recently that is controversial here. I know many posters here think that Archbishop is a saint in heaven now. Do you think Archbishop Lefebvre is in purgatory now because he made Fellay a bishop? It was his greatest mistake. Maybe he should have known better and is being punished for his poor decision.

  • A Catholic does not usually pretend to know whether a deceased person is in Hell or Purgatory.

    Mistakes are not sins (although sins are obviously mistakes). I doubt people are sent to Purgatory for mere mistakes.

  • Absent a canonization from a legitimate pope, no one can know the fate of any deceased person's soul.  We can speculate, and we can hope, but we cannot know.  That is why it is so important to pray for the dead.
