• No priest, no mass, no sacraments, not even another Catholic.  I just read the Epistle in the stall in the restroom. Now it's back to work.
This is going on three years and it's getting old.  Work a lot, sleep a little, fit in a prayer as able.  No choice.
Not quitting, but I'm discouraged.

• Have you set up a chapel or prayer corner in your home?

If not, go to a fabric store and buy a yard or two of a good gold brocade suitable for your altar, which can be a bureau top. Purchase some holy Icons like the Mother of Good Counsel. Light some candles. Smell the fragrant incense. Focus your gaze upon the holy face of the Most Pure Virgin Mary and her Christ Child.

This would allow you to have a suitable place for prayer as a bathroom stall is never a good place to read the Epistle or Gospel.Yes, we are to pray unceasingly, but we are to use discernment when handling holy books, such as the Holy Bible, a prayerbook, or a life of a saint. Those holy books belong on your altar.

Do you have a priest with whom you can exchange phone calls or emails?  We all need support and a spiritual guide.

When I was working in a government job, I would go outside where they had a garden area with tables and chairs. There I would read my Bible, which I had covered to be less conspicuous, but even that did not help. Prying eyes seem to be everywhere.

I put a holy card in my wallet and would gaze upon that whenever I had a moment, It was sad to go around and see the desks of fellow employees who had their "gods" displayed, but Christians were not allowed to have any signs of their Christianity because it was considered to be distasteful and harassing.

For example, when I was tutoring at a public community college, I put a black cloth cover on one of my Russian novels to protect it while reading it during my break, but my supervisor thought I was reading the Bible, so she read me the riot act. However, our supervisor allowed a Muslim to pray during his break in a spare room dedicated to that purpose. He volunteered that the room was for his exclusive use as he was the only Muslim on campus to ask for a prayer room. Needless to say, I was not offered a job the next semester.

I will pray for you that you will find someone with whom you can pray or be able to move into an area that has a parish.
Lord have mercy.

I am sorry that things are so rough for you...
Is there any way that you can consider moving somewhere closer to a traditional Catholic chapel?
I understand what you are going through.  I wanted to go to the True Mass since I was 15, but was not able to until I was 18 because my parents would not allow it...
You shall be in our prayers..
Keep fighting the good fight and know that we are all here for you!   :)

Thanks for your prayers.  They're appreciated.  I cannot set up an altar whilst living in a boarding situation.  The room and facilities aren't mine.  My material possessions are few.  No, I haven't a priest to write to, and for the foreseeable future, moving is not an option.  Maybe some day...I'm doing my best to care for elderly parents in failing health, a teenaged special needs nephew, and maintain a rented room by working two part time jobs.  I haven't time for a social life of any sort.  I've become as cut off and isolated as those I care for.  I'm sure God has a reason for this cross.  Right now, it seems my road has no end in sight.

God bless you for supporting your family members like this!
The Holy Family and many of the saints also lived in poverty and had few belongings.
Try not to be discouraged!  God never allows anything to happen to us which is beyond our strength, and He arranges everything for a reason.  Have courage and persevere in what you are doing!  You shall be in our prayers!

• You are not alone, even though it must feel like it. If it is possible for you to pray the Office or Little Office, even just the major hours like Lauds and Vespers, then you could feel assured that your voice was in unison with all the others who offered these prayers- and of course the rosary, in unison with those traditional Catholics, some of whom are undoubtedly reciting it at the same moment. Just something to consider, that I thought might be a little helpful. Stay strong in the faith. The Devil often seems to try to  saw us down by inches rather than with one big whack. I will pray for you.

A boarding house is the worst situation. Check the classified to see if there is a room to rent in a Christian family where you can have some privacy and kitchen privileges. When I was a college student, I found a very reasonable room to rent. The home was owned by a wonderful single Catholic lady who allowed us to cook in her kitchen and eat in her breakfast nook. All she wanted was peace and quiet. No loud radios, etc.
I will continue praying for you.
Lord have mercy.

MANNER OF HEARING MASS AT HOME
by Rev. Leonard Goffine, 1871

For those who on account of sickness, old age, or for other proper reasons cannot assist at holy Mass, especially on Sundays and Holidays.

PREFATORY REMARKS.

Bear in mind, O Christian soul, that those who would with pleasure be present at the holy Sacrifice of the Mass, if it were possible, such as the sick, the infirm, the aged, fathers and mothers who must remain at home with the little children, and for other reasons, are all included in the holy Sacrifice, that is, take part in the prayers of the Church, in the blessings and merits of the Sacrifice, if they have a sincere desire for it, and, include themselves in the holy Sacrifice.

The holy Sacrifice of the Mass does not belong to any one person, but is offered for all the faithful. As Christ offered Himself for all men on the cross, so He now offers Himself in an unbloody manner for all in the holy Mass, and as He offers the blessing and merits of His sacrifice on the cross to all men, all also have a part in them, who by faith, by hearty desire, by penitent sentiments, and by a life pleasing to God assist at the holy Sacrifice. And if you are kept at home, the priest prays, the Church prays, you Saviour Jesus Christ offers Himself, and the merits and blessing of the holy Sacrifice flow to you, if you only heartily desire it, and unite your prayers at home with the prayers of the priest and the whole congregation. Therefore kneel in spirit before the altar and devoutly make a

• Prayer to Saint Rita

Saint Rita (1381-1457) was born at Cascia in Umbria, Italy. At the age of twelve she was forced to marry an ill-tempered nobleman, who was a heavy cross to her for many years. After his death she joined the Augustinian nuns. Our Lord sealed His love for her by piercing her brow with a thorn from His sacred Crown. Saint Rita is almost without equal as the shining model of the unmarried, of wives and mothers, and of religious.

O God, who didst deign to communicate so great grace to Saint Rita that she imitated Thine example in the love of enemies and bore in her heart and on her countenance the sacred marks of Thy love and passion: grant, we beseech Thee, by her merits and intercession, that we may love our enemies and ever contemplate with deep contrition the sorrows of Thy passion: who livest and reignest world without end. Amen.

St. Rita of Cascia
by Msgr. Paul Guerin, 1882

Saint Rita was born in Italy in the late 14th century, near the little city of Cascia, of parents who though advancing in age had no children; she was the fruit of their pious prayers. At the age of twelve she resolved to consecrate herself to God by the vow of chastity, but her parents required her to marry. She obeyed; and God, who perhaps wished her to serve as an example for those having to bear with violent spouses, permitted that she be joined to a man of ferocious character, who terrified the region where he lived.

During eighteen years she succeeded so well in pacifying him that he eventually even became submissive to the laws of God. Nonetheless, his enemies killed him; and then the pious widow had to overcome her twin sons' desire for vengeance. Again she succeeded. When the two young men died not long afterwards, she was without any further bonds to keep her in the world, and she made application to a convent of Augustinian nuns at Cascia. Never had a widow been admitted there, but Saint John the Baptist, with Saint Augustine and Saint Nicholas, who had died during the 13th century in the nearby town of Tolentino, appeared to her to answer her fervent prayers. They transported her miraculously into the convent by night, despite all the locked doors. The Sisters, finding her there in the morning, could not refuse her request any longer.

Saint Rita practiced severe mortifications, eating but once a day and taking only bread and water for food. She was a model of perfect obedience; she meditated every night, from midnight until dawn, on the Passion of Our Lord, and begged to share His sufferings. On one of these nights she felt in her forehead the pain of sharp thorns, which made there an incurable wound. The festering wound isolated her from the other Sisters, and she lived thereafter almost as a hermit in the convent. The wound was cured once for a short time, when the entire group of Sisters were to go to Rome on the occasion of a universal jubilee; on their return her wound opened again.

It was discovered that Saint Rita had the gift of miracles when a young girl was cured during her mother’s visit to the convent, to beg the Saint’s prayers for that intention. Soon many visitors were coming even from distant regions to ask her charity. She expired peacefully in May of 1456. The wound of her forehead, until then very ugly, became brilliant at the moment of her death. The shrine of Saint Rita is still a favorite pilgrimage site in Italy.

     R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

     Let us pray:

O God, Who in Thy infinite tenderness dost deign to hearken to the prayer of St. Rita, and to grant to her supplication that which seems impossible to human foresight, skill and efforts, in reward for her compassionate love and firm reliance upon Thy promises: have pity upon our adversity and succor us in our calamities, that the unbeliever may know that Thou art the recompenser of the humble, the defense of the helpless and the strength of those who trust in Thee. Through Jesus Christ Our Lord. R. Amen.

O God, Who to St. Rita didst vouchsafe the great grace in very truth to love her enemies, and both in her heart and on her brow to bear the stigmata of Thy Passion: have regard, we beseech Thee, to her merits and her prayers; and grant that we may, in such wise, show mercy to our enemies, and so meditate on the pains of Thy Passion as to make our own, the blessedness promised to them that are meek and to them that mourn. Who livest and reignest world without end. R. Amen.

O glorious Saint Rita, who didst miraculously participate in the sorrowful Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ: obtain for me the grace to suffer with resignation the troubles of this life, and protect me in all my needs. R. Amen.

Prayer in an Unhappy Marriage

O God, Lord and Director of my life, You have placed me in the state of marriage. In it I hoped for joy and happiness, but alas! I experience only tribulation upon tribulation. But this is Your will. O Heavenly Father, may Your will be done! You place before my eyes Your only, Your well-beloved Son, Whose whole life here below was the hard way of the cross. You call upon me to follow Him. I will do, 0 Lord, what You demand of me. I thank You from my heart for Your love in treating me as You treated Your well-beloved Son, eternal with Yourself, and equal to You in essence. But behold my weakness! Have pity on my cowardice! I know that, without Your special grace, I shall be unable to bear my cross as I should. Give me what You demand of me, and then ask what You will. Give me Your most amiable Son, as You gave Him to the most Blessed Virgin Mary, that He may be always with me, to counsel and assist me, to preserve and daily confirm me in Your love. Place me in the open wound of His Heart. Fill me with His meekness and humility.

Grant me a share in His fortitude, and I shall be able to endure all things. Lord, send me sufferings, trials, and tribulations as numerous and as heavy as seems good to You; but, at the same time, increase my patience and resignation. Teach me, after the example of my sweet Savior, to repay evil with good, angry words with silence or gentle replies; to merit Your favor by a strict fulfillment of duty, and, by ready obedience and constant, faithful love, gain my husband's (wife's) heart for You. Preserve us, Almighty God, from the deceits of the evil spirits and from the malicious, or perhaps well-meant, though foolish language and counsels of silly people. Grant us peace and harmony, true affection and forbearance, devout sentiments and holy fear, that we may cheerfully labor, pray, and suffer with and for each other. May we tread together the way of Your holy Commandments and together reap the reward of our good works for an endless eternity! Grant us this, Heavenly Father, for the love of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, as also of all the saints who, in the married state, sanctified themselves and attained eternal life. Amen.
