  • I have the opportunity to take part in an otherwise secular public performance involving acting in a period piece. I would be taking on the role of a religious brother. Thd directors have not specified a CATHOLIC brother, but I would not be comfortable taking on a non-specific 'spiritual type guy'. The performance is set in a time period when a Catholic brother such as a Franciscan would not be out of place.

I would NOT be performing any acts unique to a priest or other member of Holy Orders.

It's not even strictly a performance per se; rather, I would simply be occupying a role in an ensemble cast, and I want the role to reflect my faith and the Faith. It only so happens that the role is described as a "friar type" because the description had to be as general as possible so as not to offend any non-Catholics who might take on the part.

I hope that wasn't too confusing. In short, I have the chance to either fill a layperson's role, and thus not be allowed to represent any particular faith at all, or I can assume a role that is at least generically 'spiritual' and thus have some leeway in how I present the role.

Should I take the role so that I can have at least some opportunities to represent the Faith, or is there good reason not to portray a religious person in such a performance?

  •  :incense:Go for it!  Become an actual Franciscan from my he time period.  Do a character study.  Don't tell anyone, just "be" a saint.  (It sounds like fun!)
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • It's not strictly a "play". It's a historical reenactment. A depiction of what life was like in a place generically represented as a crossroads of trade and travel.

If one were to insist, it's a "Renaissance Faire", but one that is largely free of imaginary characters like "King Somesuch of the Realm of Anyhoo". It's designed more to reflect actual daily life rather than performances of totally fictitious characters.

There's a chance for me to man a spot where I could offer cold water as a gesture of charity to the visitors. It would give me carte blanche to speak of God's love in Christ. Again, because I would be a religious, the directors expect at least some kind of pious language. Wait till they realize I would actually be genuinely interested in sharing the true Faith!

Even if you were simulating acts that need a priest in reality, it would not be a problem in a play or movie.  Richard Burton didn't sin when he "blessed" people in the movie "Becket".
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

  • Unless they tell you to do something offensive to the Catholic Faith go for it.
