I have the opportunity to take part in an otherwise secular public performance involving acting in a period piece. I would be taking on the role of a religious brother. Thd directors have not specified a CATHOLIC brother, but I would not be comfortable taking on a non-specific 'spiritual type guy'. The performance is set in a time period when a Catholic brother such as a Franciscan would not be out of place.
I would NOT be performing any acts unique to a priest or other member of Holy Orders.
It's not even strictly a performance per se; rather, I would simply be occupying a role in an ensemble cast, and I want the role to reflect my faith and the Faith. It only so happens that the role is described as a "friar type" because the description had to be as general as possible so as not to offend any non-Catholics who might take on the part.
I hope that wasn't too confusing. In short, I have the chance to either fill a layperson's role, and thus not be allowed to represent any particular faith at all, or I can assume a role that is at least generically 'spiritual' and thus have some leeway in how I present the role.
Should I take the role so that I can have at least some opportunities to represent the Faith, or is there good reason not to portray a religious person in such a performance?
