  • We were told at Mass today that there was a special devotion only for Christmas day in which if you were to genuflect 33 times praying " and the Word became incarnate" it would immediately free 33 souls from purgatory. I can't find any references to this practice. Does anyone know?

  • Purgatory by Fr. Schouppe makes no mention to this.  You did not say what church you are attending, that is traditional or such.  Those in purgatory need prayers approved by Holy Mother Church that have indulgences and such.  Of all the stories I have read of those souls begging to get out of purgatory, they beg for the Precious Blood, the true Mass.

You didn't think to ask the priest. I've never heard of such a practice.

  • While I have never heard of this and I doubt that such a pious practice and belief that 33 souls would be released from purgatory has actually been approved by the Church, making profound genuflections for the souls in Purgatory could be a pious and worthwhile act of self-mortification that could be offered to the suffering souls.

  • Genuflection is for Our Lord, Our Lady, but my soul tells me, stick to what works and is approved by the Christ and what the souls need most, to be remembered at Mass/Eucharist and prayers.

  • I really think the priest is leading you no where.  Why 33?  Why not 55?  I looked up 33 and the Illuminati likes that number, and the Scottish Rite masonry have the highest degree, 33 and the KKK see it as 33.  Each K represents 11 X3, And then to top it off, Dan Brown in his book, "the Lost Symbol"refers to 33.  So, unless this priest can direct you to the source of this 33 genuflection, stay clear of the priest.

  •  The original post was mine. I will ask the priest, who is European, at the next opportunity. My family is new to Tradition, and had never heard this before. I thought it was a bit strange that no one else in the chapel stayed behind after Mass to try to fulfill this, only my family members and I. (Let me tell you, it is a bit of a work out!) But it sounded like a wonderful indulgence on behalf of the Poor Souls, so we attempted to do as the priest suggested.  (However, I didn't see him doing it) But I tried googling it and couldn't find anything about it even being a European custom. So I thought I would ask here. Thanks.
