  • Why are priests and others always writing this phrase? Do they think it makes them sound really holy or something? Does anybody know when and how it started?

E.g. "We insist in a special way on prayer."

It makes them sound like liberals. So irritating.

  • I have never heard a priest say this.  Perhaps I have lucked into avoiding the type of priest who would.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

I've heard this phrase used in ad libbed prayers by Protestants who want to impress others with how "spiritual" they are, when really, they have nothing to say!  Example, when praying for someone you don't like and don't care about, but you have to look holy in public, you pray, "Dear Lord, we ask you heal Mrs. So-and-So.  Touch her body "in a special way" that she might resume her normal activities. In Your Name we pray, amen." (Gag!!!!)
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • I thought the phrase, "in a special way", referred to pregnancy.

I don't remember ever hearing it in the way described above.

Francis says it all the time, lol. Search Pope Francis in a special way. I saw 4 examples on the first page of results.

  • "The Eucharist is a community meal in which God is present in a special way."

That could be a fish fry for crying out loud, but this is what they were teaching my brothers and sisters when they were in elementary school. That's what it said in their books that they weren't allowed to bring home (my sister sneaked hers home, and that's how my parents found out what was being taught.)  It's also when my parents started really understanding the total scam the Novus Ordo is.
    Matthew 5:37

But let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil.

Indeed he is. Still, it's not difficult to see why someone would confuse the two expressions. After all, a woman ends up being "in the family way" because some guy has touched her body "in a special way."
