  • .... sometimes occurs at novus ordo chapels when there is a shortage of priests. Is this a post-Vat II novelty, or did the real Catholic Church have "Communion service" (with no Mass) before that false Council?

  • It reeks of Vatican II and should never be happening. If there isn't a priest available for Mass at one parish, go elsewhere. Most Catholics are within 15 minutes of at least 3 parishes, and that's an honest guess.

We shouldn't make a mockery of the Holy Sacrifice like that with a "Communion service".

  • The female principal of my Novus Ordo grade school did one of these "Communion services" when there was no priest. What a scandal for a lady to open up the tabernacle, which was placed behind the altar where it should be, and touch the sacred vessels! (Considering this was Novus Ordo, it was probably just unconsecrated bread and profane vessels anyways…)

  • It was unconsecrated bread because there was absolutely no Mass being held. I hope the bishop chastised those responsible.

  • Prior to Vatican II there were no communion services with laynmen officiating. Howwever there were occasions when laymen did serve as extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. That was in times of war, ιnѕυrrєcтισn, or other civil disturbances laymen would take the hosts from the tabernacle and distribute/consume them in order to prevent the sacrilege tat would come from profanation of the Eucharist.

Some Novus Ordo bishops tend to crack down on all things un-Catholic while some let it pass. It happens.

  • OP here... for the record, I don't go to a novus ordo mass. I heard from somebody else, who is novus ordo, that there was a "Communion service" occurring due to a temporary priest shortage.

Actually, your shock surprised me.  In many of the parishes I had visited back when I was captive in the Novus Ordo, the tabernacle was routinely opened by laymen or laywomen to retrieve the ceremonial bread they kept there.  This is especially true when the tabernacle is off to the side or kept in a broom closet or next to the exit though I've also seen it happen when the altar was behind the priest.  At communion time, one of the eucharistic ministers would usually walk over to the tabernacle, open it, retrieve its contents, and go up to the Cranmer's Table (i.e., the altar) where, usually, the priest would combine the contents with the hosts he's blessed and divide them all in the bowls or plates used by the distributors.

In 2014, I would never have thought that this would surprise anyone.  I'm sure you'll get used to it now that it's been introduced at your parish.  Besides, it will help to give you (and the kids at the school) a proper understanding of what the Novus Ordo really thinks of the eucharist in their parishes.

  • On Friday Sept 14, 2001 my NO parish had a "healing prayer service" that was led by an Ursaline nun in a pantsuit.  The pastor and deacon were sitting in pews while she led the service. Communion under both species was administered by the pastor and deacon. One of the very disturbing incidences that made me realize that I was not in the Catholic Church.

  • O my Jesus, pardon and mercy through the merits of Your most Holy Wounds.

I am so sorry. There's bad in the Novus Ordo, but that encroaches apostasy.

They just happened to have "consecrated wine" sitting around for the service?

No, it was (most likely unconsecrated) bread only.

It is not "ceremonial bread" it is the Body of Christ.
