What is wrong with the Amish?

Some bad theology, and not possessing the faith.

Not a small matter of course, but beyond that I have no criticisms!

Here is my point: Some would add, "They have a distinctive dress and stand aloof from the modern world."

But I disagree -- that is something all Traditional Catholics should do.

Now our Faith doesn't teach that electricity is evil, etc. so I'm not saying we should live like the Amish (understand what I mean?) But we SHOULD do things that help us live as (traditional) Catholics, not caring about "fitting in" with the world. That much the Amish are to be positively admired for, and imitated!

I've heard trads -- usually the liberal variety -- say things like, "Oh, we shouldn't go around dressing different from others. If the women only wear dresses and skirts, we'd stand out -- like the Amish! We're not Amish."

Likewise, what if more Catholics gave up things like TV and Hollywood movies? We'd be withdrawing, in a sense, in an Amish-esque way. But it would be commendable.

True, we're not Amish. But what's wrong with putting up a barrier to the corrupting influence of the modern world? And putting up extra safeguards to purity (such as dresses/skirts for women)?

I should clarify a bit more:

Another Catholic objection is, "We're supposed to be the light of the world, and convert our fellow-men to the Faith."

Besides the fact that the Scripture quote is being interpreted incorrectly (that's another issue), this hypothetical Catholic is completely missing the point.

Catholics CAN mingle in society to do business, etc. but they must not be of the world. You can still convert your co-workers, etc. but we shouldn't make too many non-Catholic friends, at least not close friends.

HOW Catholics can best arm themselves for battle with the World is open for debate. For the Amish, it's already decided (they can't live among non-Amish, because the Amish believe electricity is from the devil, etc.) But Catholics must battle with the world -- that much we must realize.

You can either be accepted by the World, OR be a good Catholic. They are mutually exclusive. To whatever extent "the World" likes you, you have compromised with error.

Certain communists respected their great opponents in the Church -- that's different. That's respect for a worthy enemy. NOT the same thing as love or acceptance.

I guess my point comes down to:

The fact that the Amish have a distinct identity is not a bad thing.

If Traditional Catholics had an equally distinct identity, it wouldn't be a bad thing.

Of course, we Catholics would always be more interesting than the Amish, since all cultures could be good traditional Catholics -- culture sits atop the Faith, rather than being one and the same.
