  • I know there aren't many old timers here like me, but is there anyone here who has high cholesterol?  If so, what have you done to lower it?

My doctor wants to put me on pills, but I don't want to take them.

I'm a slim woman, so overweight isn't an issue at all, and I barely eat as it is.

  • I went to Sprouts, or your local natural food/supplement store.  I was told to take liquid fish oil.  I was instructed to take a full tablespoon one hour before or one hour after I eat.  The large bottle will get you through a month.

Next, I went off glutens and sugar; cut down alot.  Find other ways, such as spaghetti squash, more salads and lean meats.   Try to stay away from red meats, and take on chicken/turkey.

I also went L-caritine in the liquid.  I try to exercise more.

I have fruit smoothies with almond milk and add cinnamon for metabolism.  Also Green Tea.  I eat by 4pm and try not to eat past that time.  I sleep better for it.

But with little changes here and there, I went from 600 to 200.  Also, flush free niacin is also on my list.  I was at 2,000 mg.  Start gradual from the 500, til you get to the amount you think you might need.  Maybe 1,000 and then see your numbers and see if you need more.

Doctors are too quick to get you on statins and even those they say are not, have the same results.  On the brain.  I tried the lipitor for 6 weeks and my head was fuzzy, and my muscles wanted to ache.  I got off and just read more on the internet and found out that those drugs take away your nutrients, the drugs take away water soluables (sp).  That means, whatever you take vitamins and such, the drug just flushes it out.  You get nothing.

So, I told Sprouts I needed to put back all it took away.  I won out!  Thank God!

  • 600???  Mine is only 259.

She says I have a 14% chance of having a stroke/heart attack within the next ten years.

I've been reading about the drugs usually prescribed for this, and I say:  No, thanks.

    Thank you, Songbird.

  • I too am an oldtimer with slightly raiesed cholesterol levels, and I refuse to take anti-cholesterol drugs.

Cholesterol is not a disease but a normal part of the human body. Doctor's get brownie points for promoting drugs. Also medical schools are funded by drug companies, so doctor training is strongly biased in favour of drugs and against safer methods of treatment. You are right to refuse to take a drug which has dangerous side effects. As Songbird pointed out statins affect the muscles weakening them. Sounds like you already take good care of your diet.

Don't feel pressured to take drugs unless they are essential to your health.

  • Good post, Nadir.  259 is not so bad.  Just never go below 200.  And try avocados for good fats.  You don't have a need for drugs.  Just a little lower and that is easy to reach.  When women are small in height and such, so are the veins and such, they are small too.  But gee you don't have far to go at all.  That is easy.

Yes, Nadir, those so called docs are just out for brownie points and I kind of wonder if it is also war on the body to see us dead sooner.

  • Thanks, Songbird and Nadir!

I will tell the doctor to forget about the drugs.

And I love avocados!  I understand cashews are good too in lowering cholesterol.

God bless you both for answering me!

  • You need good fats - avocados, coconut oil, fish oil, natural butter.

Try apple cider vinegar too.  It will reduce sugar cravings and it good for blood pressure.

I don't have any sugar cravings, but I do have high blood pressure.

How would I use apple cider vinegar to help with that?

  • The organic apple cider vinegar I have has directions on the bottle.  Mine says 1-2 tsps in 8 oz of water.  How often?  I don't know.  I would try that first.  My daughter says she can not handle vinegar.  Some people who have arthritis are told to stay away from vinegar.  So, just give it a start, I guess.

    i have arthritis too.

Maybe I'll nix the apple cider vinegar and just stick with avocados and cashews.   :ready-to-eat:
