  • Plain wholemeal wheat flour will not last long once it is milled.

    Denatured white flour will last almost indefinitely, but it is unhealthy. MIce and rats know better than to eat it if given a choice, which is why it became so popular with wholesalers and retailers.

    we always buy 25 kg whole wheat and grind it with a stonegrinder as we need it. A bag of wheat will last us (a couple) over a year and costs us $ Aus 16. THhat's all our bread for over a year and it's soooo good!

  • Thank you very much indeed. The information and the calculation (my mother and I are also two mouths) are both very useful.

    Although this is a digression, I remember now for the first time in years my grandfather's wholemeal loaves, spread with mashed bananas or pilchards.

    God bless and keep you, and all who have eyes to see and so  must seriously consider how to feed our families n the trials and torments that await us -- so richly deserved -- for this Age of Perdition.

  • I use oxygen absorbers in sealed mylar. Supposedly this is good for 10 years, but only time will tell.

    If someone is aiming for long-term storage of food of any kind, part of the plan should be storing (and rotating) anti-oxidants, vitamins, and supplements.

    If all hell breaks loose, we cannot reasonably expect nutritional perfection; we will be lucky to have anything in our bellies.

    One good thing about wheat flour is that mixing with liquid and baking it is needed to completely break it down.  That is why flour never rots unless it is wet or cooked!  :-)

  • You can buy hard white and/or red wheat from the LDS store online. It will last 30 years. Six #10 cans will run you under $30.00 dollars. I've bought them, but haven't used them. They're for emergencies only. I just use the bagged bread flower from the store for every day baking.

    Their case of six #10 cans is 33# of wheat. That's about 30 loaves of bread.

    Check for a local store to save shipping costs.

    If you don't have a wheat grinder to make flour for bread you can boil whole wheat berries.
