  • Anyone else experiencing this?  Being able to read PM's but not being able to reply to them due to "Cath Info Exiting" error message?   I was able to send -- not reply --- to a new PM I sent Matthew regarding this issue, but I can't reply to my own received messages.

Also, I apologize for putting this in General Discussion.  I searched for a Tech Issues forum, didn't see it.

Once in a while, the server I'm on experiences problems. Too much load, they need to reboot, or something. When this happens, you'll get an error like that.

There is nothing special about a PM compared to viewing the forum, posting a post, or any other forum activity.

The fact a PM gave you an error was a coincidence.

But I assure you that the programming for CathInfo (the part I have any control over) works 100%.

Unfortunately, sometimes the whole site goes down for a minute here or there. I don't have my own server, but rely on a hosting company. If another site is misbehaving that could take up all the resources of the server, and then ALL sites on that server will have problems.

    I hope this helps.

  • I see.  Well, I will try again later to reply to PM's.   Thank you.

  • I keep getting an "Error" message whenever I try to access the "Fighting Errors in the Modern World" subforum. The other subforums seem to be working fine.
"It is licit to resist a Sovereign Pontiff who is trying to destroy the Church. I say it is licit to resist him in not following his orders and in preventing the execution of his will. It is not licit to Judge him, to punish him, or to depose him, for these are acts proper to a superior."

I assure you, it's a coincidence. You might as well keep trying the same forum -- when the site comes back up, you'll be able to get into any of them.

It also could be your Internet connection going in and out. I haven't had any problems with the site lately.

I'll tell you what it ISN'T though -- each sub-forum having a mind/soul/personality/program of its own, with each needing to be hit a different way to get those old gears moving. Temperamental old stinker, you old Millennium Falcon you! Like an old car (or spaceship) with a lot of quirks and personality...

Uh...no. The same exact PHP programming script runs all subforums, and they all access the same database. Like I said -- either they all work, or they all don't work. It would be physically impossible for it to be otherwise.

You'll have to trust me on this one.

When I hit an error message (I haven't lately) it will sometimes "stick" for that page. So, if I got the error when trying to access General Discussion, I can a minute or two later go to New Posts or Catholic Living, but still not be able to get General Discussion to load until I use F5 to reload that page.

  • Thank you Matthew and Mater for your replies. I tried hitting the F5 as Mater suggested when the error message came up, the page then loaded properly. Thanks, it worked!

  • Ah, that solves the mystery!

So the browser (on your end) was caching the error page instead of trying to load the latest page from the server.

The server was perfectly ready to serve up the page (I was right about that) but from your perspective, you were also correct that only one subforum was apparently staying in an error state, due to the browser caching.

Sorry if I sounded like I was dismissing your issue; I was only stating facts from my side here. I can't really diagnose individual computer/browser problems; I don't have enough resources to give out personal tech support. All I can do is keep the forum itself operational.

So it's the browser that was at fault. F5 will explicitly reload or ask the server for the latest page -- that should always work.

I didn't think that you were dismissing my issue at all. I must admit that I really didn't understand much of what you wrote, since I'm quite technologically impaired and don't know much about computers. I understand that it's my computer that's the problem (it's an old laptop).  Glad it's working now!

  • I've checked and my setting "receive messenger from users" was not marked but I never touched this before, let's see if that solves the issue. I thought my PM box was full and that was the issue but after cleaning it I still could not receive messages
