  • What are some useful programs to help keep one's computer safe from spyware?
I read somewhere that there is an app that allows you to track who is tracking you.

  • Malware Bytes is helpful to keep your machine clean.

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

A nice free antivirus program is avast.

    http://www.avast.com/en-us/index

A good registry cleaner is CC cleaner.

    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

    That should help. All free.

  • For Firefox there's also Flash Block if you have Flash, and the Profound Censor add on to censor rotten language.

  • Firefox is slower than chrome. Sometimes it causes my AVS media player to stop. I have a fast laptop, and I like listening to gregorian chant as I browse this forum, but firefox seems to have this flaw...

  • IT doesn't seem quite as good as it used to be, but the add ons are what are the draw for it.

For the most part what problems I've run into with have been trying to visit Microsoft's websites with it. . .

  • Many years ago I got so tired of downloading virus definitions, firewalls, anti spyware etc that I wiped Micro$oft Windows off my computer and installed Linux.

Linus is completely free, and is built up from the ground with security in mind. And ALL the software I have ever needed or wanted is avaliable, completely FREE.

No more viruses, no more anti spyware, no more firewall tweaking !

  • I use Linux too, and I also don't miss having to worry about malware and viruses.

Whenever I need software, I just launch the Software Manager and find the program I want and click "Install" -- everything is free!

  • I've really got to convert to Linux.

Soulguard, while Firefox presents some problems for you, they do have Ghostery, which is superb; also, Lightbeam and Priv3 add ons.

  • Since hooking up with the free version of Panda Cloud Antivirus, a couple of years ago, I haven't looked back. No need to keep up to date with virus signatures. Its all done in the Cloud.
Panda seems to get on with the job with the least interference.

This sounds intriguing. Knowing next to nothing about operating systems and the like, I simply wonder whether I could continue to use all my Microsoft Office programs with Linux installed (I have Windows XP now).

Incidentally, my computer is used only for work and shopping. No games, no movies, no downloads of anything unrelated to work. Also, I have used the Opera browser (an older version, 12-point something) for about five years, since IE8 takes forever to load and all its damn add-ons slow my computer to a crawl. The "security suite" I use also interferes with performance and causes a freeze or crash at least once a day.

You are probably using Windows, there is a Firefox version for Windows that is faster in windows especially if you have older hardware. This is what I used in windows, when I was still using it http://www.palemoon.org/. Now I ditched windows :) so I dont have to worry about that, hope that  helps.
