WHen someone asks my views, I say "Catholic", which is not the false left/right, conservative/liberal boxes that are artifically created by society......
To read prior Popes, starting esp with Leo XIII, views on justice, economics and society, the Glenn Beck/Limbaugh would likely say that he was a "liberal" or if they read teh statements against socialism, that he was "conservative".......
Catholic Social Teaching-and I mean, not that Thing that "conservatives" ignroe and mcok ,but never study and that "liberals" pcik and chose how to apply and dopt-but true CST is neither liberal nor conservative.
"Liberals" adopted CST, but distorted it to fit a thin mask of socialism and the like.
"Conservatives" never even talked about it, burying it to appease Americanism and the bottom line. Pope Leo XIII went against the grain of the Prot work thic and AMerican Exceptionalism, etc and hene he get Buckley with his Mater No article so famous in the 60's. Pope John XXIII, in the narrow confines of his Encyical, was in line with Rerum and QA.....whatever else......
The reason why Beck and Limbaugh will never bee Catholics, true ones (not hte TOny Blair/Gingrich crowd), is because they will not submit to teachings on war, economics.
Likewise, the Nancy Pelosi types want the name and play Catholic, but really are not reading what the Popes have said about economics either, and most esp, abortion/contraception...
Hence to be Catholic is not a good fit at all in either false left/right type camps......One cannot fit into the modern Democrats nor Republicans.......though majority of Catholics try to....

The term conservative can apply to social issues, or fiscal issues, thus causing confusion. A person can be socially conservative and decry abortion, yet support governmental debt, thus eschewing the fiscal conservativism. In politics many folks shift positions over the years--I don't mind flip-flopping--I respect that people grow and change. I certainly have more conservative beliefs about governmental spending as I have grown older.

Some "conservatives" are gay, many open, some not.
Some "liberals" are pro-life, many are not. Some Republican "conservatives" are pro-choice.....
Conservatives are often conservative only in economics, or guns, or abortion....etc...
Some liberals are same way.......when one looks at record, some get a A in abortion, but then tend to be more liberal in other things....
liberalism, in the context of American politics and conservatism, are largely undefined and hard to class.....
a good talk:
