Of course I have read QP. This was a dispiplnary and rubrical matter. The simple fact is that no pope can legislate such things, binding their successors for all time. Infallible proclamations of dogma, sure. No pope can come along and say that the BVM was not assumed into heaven at the end of her life. Also, at most, it seems to me that it forbids abolishing the canonized rite, not the formation of new rites.
In terms of the topic. I don't know that the two cardinals living together is necessarily scandalous. Priests live together in rectories all the time. I also don't know off hand whether Cardinal Levada has protected child molester priests, although the mere fact that he is a bishop makes it likely. Cardinal Law did. Cardinal Mahoney did. They are still bishops in good standing. So are countless others. If my statement that the pope has chosen to protect the boys club over children every time is an overstatement, it is not an overstatement by much. I am not aware of one bishop he has removed or disciplined for this. |
Segismund,
I hate to tell you but you are not a Traditionalist. If you read QP and have the liberal opinion that this was a "dispiplnary and rubrical matter",you need to read it again.
Pope St. Pius the V was the pope of the Council of Trent. I just quoted to you that the council of Trent forbids new rites. It is true that the next pope can completely suppress the N.O but that would be within his power because the N.O. is only 50 years old. It would not be of Immemorial Tradition. Immemorial Tradition over 200 years old can not be abolished but the N.O. according to the canon of the Council of Trent, is in violation.
I will let others answer to you about the clergy problems. I'm trying to get you to rethink the N.O. |
You have no way of knowing this, being new around here, but I have never claimed to be a traditionalist. I am what most people here would all a conservative NO type, or a semi-trad. I attend the Byzantine Liturgy pretty much exclusively now. I prefer the TLM to the NO, but I don't believe the NO is heretical or invalid if celebrated properly.
Popes and councils can speak infallibly and bind the faith of the Church for all time on matters of dogma. They simply cant do so on matters of discipline or rubrics.

Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spirit, and may not shrink from giving our lives for our brethren. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

Well, +Levada and the current Archbishop of San Francisco have a curious relationship to say the least, but as you say there is "nothing" scandalous in that.
I don't understand why some of these Bishops were in place, but there were similar disciplinary problems with Bishops who were far more controversial in other times.
But interestingly enough, there have been several high-level personnel changes in the last few months.
So, the assertion from the slanderous, and cowardly, SpiritusSanctus, that Pope Benedict is doing nothing is false. Clearly, the Church has taken measures to deal with this problem as is borne out by the statistics showing relatively few accusations of priests compared to the more narcissistic 80s and 70s.

As long as Cardinal Mahoney and Cardinal Law are bishops in good standing, the pope has done nothing. Or at least, nothing effective.

Hold thy tongue, woman.
You have no authority to anathematize people, and you don't even have reasonable arguments.
You are surely a scourge from God, so I should probably be thankful that He has granted such an inarticulate and vitriolic opponent. |
There is simply no call for this kind of rudeness.
