Coolness. As I was learning about the Catholic faith, I found him and was completely in love with his show "Life is Worth Living" CD's. My grandfather, a great big ol' Protestant LOVED watching him. Abp. Sheen gave my very much loved Pappaw some pause to his original idea that Catholics 'might not be statue worshiping, cannibals after all' ;) Coming from someone who has been known to be VERY Anti Catholic that is a big giant chasm that was crossed thanks to Apb. Sheen's wonderful programming.

Servant of God Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen is now “Venerable” after the Vatican announced today that Benedict XVI had signed a decree recognising that the archbishop heroically lived Christian virtues.
The announcement of the decree marks a significant step in the canonization cause of Peoria, Ill.-born Archbishop Sheen (1895-1979), the Emmy award-winning televangelist whose program, "Life is Worth Living," was broadcast from 1951 to 1957.
The Vatican now has to recognise a miracle has occurred through his intercession for him to be beatified, the penultimate step to canonization. Alleged miracles have been reported, which are now being assessed by experts in Rome.
For little over a year, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints has been examining his cause based on volumes of Archbishop Sheen’s life gathered in his home diocese of Peoria. The Congregation will have first examined if the archbishop had shown evidence of the three theological virtues of faith, hope and charity, and then the four cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance.
Theologians and cardinals will then have confirmed that he did indeed practice heroic virtue, leading the Holy Father, with the aid of the Consulters from the Congregation, to declare him "Venerable". Now that the Pope promulgated the decree of heroic virtue, the former bishop of Rochester, NY, may now be venerated by all the faithful.

I hope this process goes no further. No disrespect to Archbishop Fulton Sheen, but he does not deserve to be canonized. Although he said many good and true things, he started to go off the rails in the late 1950's as he became more and more popular. He was also very supportive of Vatican II and its 'reforms.'

Everything he did through the 1940's was excellent, but in the 1950's he changed because of the T.V show and lost his truly Catholic tone. I used to adore everything the man said and did so I read his books, just about all of them (which is very repetitive since he repeats the same ideas over and over again in the majority of them).
-In Life is Worth Living he was quoting Teilard de Chardin, and had that line people remember him by where he states if you are not a Catholic we can all join together on our knees in prayer, with never a mention of conversion.
-In the book Footprints in a Darkened Forest he has his new "saints" and they include Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr, Mother Theresa, and I forgot the 4th although I think it was JFK.
-In his autobiography, Treasure in Clay, he makes 2 references to Card Ottaviani without naming him directly and both references were detraction against the man. The first was a joke about traditional stance and which Council he was going to with a taxi driver (Trent instead of Rome), and the other was about turning off the speaker when he was talking about changing the Mass and how funny it was and how they all applauded. He does not mention the context of the speech, or who he was.
-He had a desire, and an attempt to close down churches in Rochester and turn them into low-cost housing as an attempt to help the poor.
-His repetition later in life to recommend a Protestant Scripture scholar as a daily source of understanding Scripture over Catholic saints puzzles me.
For those reasons I hope he is not canonized with full and complete scrutiny because I don't understand the man later in life. |

......................... "The dauntless will have to forge ahead alone; in old pagan Rome, the first Christians also had to abstain from participating in the feasts and meetings of their fellow citizens. Perhaps the new paganism can only be vanquished by such sacrifices. Nevertheless: Nolite timere, pusillus grex, quia placuit Patri vestro dare vobis regnum" (Luke 12:32).-The future Cardinal Von Galen, October 1926.
"For Catholics to follow their times is a disgrace, worse than that of a king abdicating his kingship. How can such (liberal) Catholics be taken seriously? Either they will come back to the fullness of their Faith or they will go over to the enemies of the Faith, but they cannot remain suspended in between."- Louis Veuillot

I don't think anyone would say you are being disrespectful by disagreeing with Abp. Sheen's being 'made' [I don't know the right word to use] Venerable. You are a beautiful soul who does have a valid point and thank you for sharing it. I think there are times that those Priests that have supported Vatican II, God will/has taken care of the matter. It is that simple. However, in what I know, albeit very little for his lifetime work, based solely on, "Life is Worth Living" he does deserve the consideration.
For me personally, his work on the T.V. show via DVD did guide me when I was a poor, pathetic lost Pentecostal. So please forgive me if I am in error.
I personally have a few of those in consideration for sainthood that I find questionable as well, so I completely understand where you are coming from.
And let's hope and pray that his devil's advocate assigned to this process is fair, truthful and follows the Holy Spirit with regards to his life, his work and his priesthood.
