Full auto turns your firearm from an accurate point weapon into a "cone of fire" area weapon. There are times when doctrine demands saturation of the "beaten zone," (riots, "human wave," room clearing, etc.) but, as Brainglitch said, it is very wasteful. Consider that even 3-round burst mode turns your 30-rd magazine into a virtual 10-round magazine. You can also destroy a barrel in a hurry.

True, but "cone of fire" only really applies to heavier machine guns, as opposed to assault rifles. If you're doing room clearing, or you really want to scare the crap out of a mob, use a 12 gauge shotgun. 25 shell cyclical mag and a Knox stock and you're in business, and the bad guys are very much out of business.

Exactly, and barrel destruction gets worse if you're using an AK that is already surplus and has probably seen a fair amount of action.
